Hey, my Spanish II teacher says that if I do well enough in Spanish III, I'll be allowed to skip Spanish IV and take AP Spanish V. I am currently a sophomore, and I'd really like to skip the level, but would colleges look down at me for not having a foreign language senior year? AP Spanish V is as high as it goes at my school and I would rather not wait to take the AP language until senior year when I will probably forget most of the material. If I get to skip Span. III, what would be the best thing to do? Take it next year and not have a foreign language senior year or just not have a foreign language next year and wait to take AP until senior year?

I skipped IV and went to AP (which is V i guess). I took half a year of Spanish senior year. But I think if you've taken V by senior year, it won't hurt not to have a language the last year.

Spanish IV is AP for us.

I took Spanish I in 9th grade, then skipped II and III and took Spanish IV in 10th and AP Spanish Lang in 11th. I could have taken AP Spanish Lit in 12th, but decided not to and I got into all the colleges I applied to (top 20 colleges). They aren't going to penalize you for being advanced.

i agree with slipstream. i took span I freshman year for half a year and then tested out of half of span I, span II, and then took span III pre ap because i need a class to fill in my schedule and it helped me gpa. then i took span ap in 11th grade and got into to 4 of the top 20 colleges, along with all my other ones.

"they won't penalize you for being advance"...exactly

Skip it and be ahead. It would look like a nice accomplishment to me, and I'm pretty sure admissions would look upon it with a positive attitude as well. :)

wow. we're not even allowed to do that. but hey, sounds great to me. go for it tiger :p

Hmm, alrighty then, thanks everybody!

Did you learn spanish before high school? How did you study the stuff that you missed?

I was thinkin of skipping Spanish III and going to Spanish IV from Spanish II. Is it advisable to do this? How can do you cope up with the grammar that was taught in Spanish III which you skipped?

I took Spanish 1 in 8th grade, so by junior year, I was in Spanish 4. Colleges recommend 4 years of a language, so I asked a UMich admissions speaker about this, and she said that they will look at Spanish 1 as part of my 4 years even if it wasn't in high school.

About the skipping part, if I had known that Spanish 4 at my school was all culture and art and literature and stuff, I would have skipped it. After Spanish 4, I actually felt like I knew less Spanish than I did after Spanish 3. It's definitely possible to go from Spanish 3 to 5(AP) and still understand what's going on.

Okay, right now I'm in Spanish 4AP (or going to be in it when school starts)...

I'm sure I'm going to take the AP test for it

BUT, our school also offers Spanish 5AP...should I take it and take the test for it too?

I mean, is it "good" to take 2 Spanish APs...like for college...do people do that anyway?

Thanks!

I wouldn't think it would be good for college, because I don't think they'd give you any extra credits for taking AP Spanish twice. I'd say try to go to the next level after the first AP at a local college or something, as PSEO.

So you don't think I should take Spanish 5 AP?

but that means that I'll stop taking a foreign language after sophomore year...is that bad?

Because I don't think I'll take Spanish at a community college or something...I probably won't take Spanish outside schoool...because I dont' want to major in anything that has to do with foreign languages...

Should I still take the class (Spanish 5 AP) and then just not take the test?

What do you guys think I should do?

Thanks!

BTW...what's PSEO?

Well, I'd at least take 1 more year of Spanish, either at a community college or something, or Spanish 5. I'd take it at a community college, rather than Spanish 5, but if you don't want to do that, it's your choice.

ANd PSEO is Post Secondary Enrollment Option, just where you take classes at a college while you're in high school.

No they would not look down on you. You would have "maxed out" the courses available. I think that would be a plus. Piece of advice.... if you do that... don't switch schools. I skipped up so I would have taken AP french 5 last year (junior yr) at my old school, then I switched schools and now I'm not ever going to take AP (sad.... but I can actually speak the language which is all I really care about).

I don't want to sound ignorant by asking so many questions...but why would you rather take spanish at a college? doesn't that charge money? whereas, at school...it's FREE...

And also, if I take Spanish 5 at school or at a college, should I still take AP test for it?

BTW, at my school Spanish 4 is Language and Spanish 5 is Literature.

Thanks so much!

Well, in Ohio, if you take classes at a public college, your highschool, or the school board or something pays the cost for you.
