I want to take Ap Physics 1 and 2 my junior and senior year but I would have to skip Chemistry in order to fit it in my schedule. This year I’m taking Physical Science and my sophomore year I’m taking Acc Biology.Doubling up in sciences is not allowed at my school so that is not an option for me.I want to major in Computer Engineering or Computer Science but I’m not sure if taking Ap Physics rather that Chemistry would hurt my changes of getting accepted into college. As far as I know chemistry isn’t a required course to graduate high school and the college that I want to go to (OSU) only specifies that 3 natural sciences with lab experience is required.
Let me get this straight. Physics AND Chemistry are considered as ‘lab sciences’. So, not taking chemistry SHOULDN’T hurt your chances at all. I think it’s wise for you to take the course of physics since you want to go into computer science. Plus, you can include that you want to major in CS and have taken physics to further your knowledge etc.
Colleges want to see at least a year of bio, chem, and physics respectively. I think it is better for you to take chem this year, and AP Physics 1 in senior year because of this. Nearly all colleges highly recommend at least a year of bio, chem, and physics, therefore, because you’re going into computer science and/or engineering, a very competitive STEM field, I think you should not skip chem even though it is not required by your high school to graduate. Also, for a field like that, chemistry is much more useful than something like biology, and knowing chem info before heading into that field will help you.
In my area, physics is not a requirement to graduate high school, and the reason I am telling you this is to show that it is a good idea to take the three core sciences even if they are not all required.
Good luck and have a good day!
All three of biology, chemistry, and physics in high school is desirable.
Note that the non calculus AP physics 1 or 2 is unlikely to get subject credit or advanced placement in an engineering major.
You should take Chemistry Honors jr year and AP Physics 1 or 2 senior year.
As an alternative, you could take an intro to chemistry (NOT “general chemistry”) at a local CC over the summer, then take AP Physics 1 or 2 junior year, and AP Physics C senior year.
Taking AP Physics 1+2 won’t help much (they cover different topics but at a similar level, in the same way APUSH and AP Euro cover different topics but are at the same level.)
Do it, especially if Physics is AP and Chemistry is Honors. Physics applies more to CS than Chemistry.
You should take at least 1 year of BIo, Chem, and Physics. That is more important than 2 years of Physics. Physics 2 will be waiting for you in college.
