Is it possible to just take a test (for credit) and skip Geometry and take Algebra 2 in 9th grade? I know it is possible to take a summer course and receive credit, but is it possible to simply take a test and receive credit? Thanks!
It depends on your school, so you should ask your guidance counselor. My school let me test out of math courses by taking the final exams.
Same as above for my school
But then you’ll never really know Geometry.
Oh, I know you’ll probably know enough to pass the test. But you’ll never know the beauty of the subject, just enough to skip the course.
I honestly don’t understand what the rush is.
@bjkmom this is pretty debatable - in my opinion HS geometry squeezes out a lot of the beauty of geometry and mathematics with the so-called “two-column proof” and the random postulates that make the subject dull for most. I recommend getting something like the AoPS Introduction to Geometry.
Here’s an article I came across recently:
https://www.maa.org/external_archive/devlin/LockhartsLament.pdf
Geometry is just shapes and some Algebra 1 mixed in. It’s helpful to take it but not necessary since you’ll learn/relearn most of the topics in Algebra 2/Trigonometry/PreCalculus.
Do not skip geometry if you think you’re going to take Calc AB in 10th grade. There’s no advantage to that cause people may skip AB altogether and up in BC with you in junior year. Do it if you want to go above multi var Calc in senior year
I wouldn’t recommend skipping geometry because if you’re taking the SATs, it will be helpful to know. It will also give you a good base for Pre-Calc and Calc.
There’s a difference between “testing out of the geometry class” and “never learning geometry.” If you learn geometry well on your own, you shouldn’t have problems with the SAT or future classes. It’s just that you’re more likely to learn geometry well if you take the class.
Why do you want to skip geometry? What grade are you in now? What math class(es) do you want to take in your senior year?
