Slacker friend with SERIOUSLY low stats (not by CC standards)

Ok, my friend is going to try to get into some decent schools. Here are his stats & schools -- please, please, please chance him!

Ethnicity: Chinese
Gender: Male

WGPA: 3.187
Rank: 252/538
SAT I: 1880 (530CR, 700M, 650W) <--- retaking in Dec, but he's not studying.
SAT II: 730 Math 2, 780 Chem
AP: Calc AB - 5, Chem - 5

Senior Year Grades (Q1)

AP Psychology - F
AP Statistics - D
Honors Physics 1 - C
Journalism - W (was failing as of time of withdrawal)

EC's:

VP of science club

Math Team

Schools:
University of New Hampshire
Ithaca College
Boston University
University of Massachusetts
University of Maryland, College Park

Is there hope for him? If his SAT scores go to, say, 2150+, would it dramatically improve his chances?

i think maryland will be a little difficult, but in at the others.

chance back?

Ithaca- Probably In/ Waitlisted?
Boston U- Reach
U Maryland- Little Reach... my friend with a 3.14 GPA and 1900 SAT got in.

U Massachussetts Amherst or Boston?

i have a 3.25 W GPA and basically the same SAT scores and i got into bard college (27% rate)
so i cant imagine you should have too much trouble getting into ithaca (applying there too)
just make sure to raise you grades a lot in the second quarter!!!

Unless he does something about those first quarter grades, your friend is going to have problems even graduating from high school.

As far as acceptance at the other schools, I would have said:

Ithaca--match
Boston Univ--slight reach
Maryland (College Park)--reach
University of Mass at Boston--match

But unless those 1st quarter grades go up, then Ithaca will also be a reject.

Best of luck to your friend in improving things during the remainder of this school year.

Unless he improves on those grades, he's gonna have trouble getting into any of the schools listed.

Otherwise, UMass Boston would be a match.
