Slight emergency: Syracuse vs. Temple

Major: Business - Marketing/Possibly Management Information Systems
COA: Same
Proximity to home - Syracuse is 4 Hours away, Temple is 2.

I love both schools, and both have known business schools with a strong alumni network. Help?

Syracuse University is the better college. It has higher endowment, higher graduation rate, higher rankings, higher campus life rating etc. North Philly is not a good place to be for 4 years.

So you have chosen Syracuse, a private, and are now thinking that the weather sucks in upstate NY and would much prefer the warmer climate and crime in Philly?

Syracuse! I would go to Temple for med school for that I would put up with philly. (philly is a bad place), the slight weather difference is not worth the safety issue.(IMO)

Philly is not a bad place. It’s a city and like any other city, it has good and bad areas. I do agree that the area Temple is in is a tough, high-crime area. I do know many parents, however, whose kids are going to Temple and they say the actual campus is safe - but not the areas around it. The main problem I see with Temple is that when kids move off campus, they tend to disperse into different areas of the city that are nicer. And that can create less of a cohesive, campus feel since not everyone lives right near the campus.

Given your choice, I would go to Syracuse. It’s a better university. But for those who don’t know Philly, it’s generally a nice city with many nice areas. It’s not fair to judge a whole city by its worst areas.

I would go with Syracuse

I would go to Syracuse too. But I don’t understand those commenting on the safety of Philly…after spending 4 undergraduate years in Syracuse, I can tell you that Syracuse isn’t exactly an upscale city either. As with many large uni’s in college towns, the main campus is surrounded by a very economically depressed industrial “city”. You can’t walk beyond the campus limits at night…not that you’d really want to because there’s absolutely nothing around.

Nobody is talking about the whole Philly. We are talking about North Philly…Unless you have been there, you don’t know what its like.

North Philly IS awful, I agree. It’s the worst part of the city. But Zobroward said “Philly is a bad place” and I wanted to make it clear that it wasn’t the whole city. People going to Penn, for example, are in a totally different part of the city. Any city school will have some crime concerns. But North Philly is a whole 'nother level of crime.

To be honest, when I visited Temple, I asked at least 25 students randomly (a lot of which were girls, I am a guy) about the safety concerns and whatnot, and they said they’ve never felt unsafe. Obviously I wouldn’t be walking around sketchy areas of North Philly at 1 in the morning alone, it’s like any other city - use common sense and you’ll be OK. The surrounding neighborhoods of Temple are clearly depressed, but Philadelphia as a whole I feel is a more thriving city than Syracuse is.

Can anybody comment on the business school compared to overall reputation? From what I’ve heard, Temple’s is better, though more input is always good.

^No Syracuse is better for Business and overall.
