Slight issue...

I am really concered if we will be able to afford anything. My dad makes about $65k a year, but the fafsa calc on this site says EFC is only about $7. Its really hard to believe that, but I will I guess. Im really really looking into SUNY Geneseo and that is ~$15k, my dad cant spend any more then about $7200 a year for school. I dont think I can trust them to cover the rest since they are seriously underfunded, and I really cant get into too much debt because of a possible future in medical school, I need money for that.

I raised the issue but my mom just went ballistic and kept telling me its not my issue and not to worry about it because itll all work out. Her thinking is that if the school wants you theyll pay, but I know this isnt the case. She seems to think screaming and using curse words on me will make it all go away.

I really dont know what to do... any suggestions?

Tiss,

welcome to CC.

As far as the SUNY schools are concerned, you are in a bit of a bind, because your family has too much money for you to be eligible for TAP or Pell and not enough to foot the whole $15,000. One of my co-workers has 2 kids at New Paltz and I was sure that the family would get aid (they make less than your family). The only aid they got was loans.

For our family it ended up being less expensive for D to attend Dartouth than it would have been for her to attend SUNY.

While you definitely need to keep Geneseo on your list as a financial safety, my advice to you is to hedge your bets by applying to a variety of schools to look for a school where you will be happy and that will also offer you the best financial deal. There are a number of schools that offer waive their application fee if you apply on line.

We don't know enough about you as far as grades, scores, etc. If you can offer some more maybe we can give you some suggestions.

Are you a female? Schools like Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke SAT optional) and Smith will offer you great financial aid.

Depending on how you are doing as a student, look at schools that offer merit money and definitely look at schools that are need blind in the financial aid process and meet 100% demonstrated need giving basically grant aid. These are usually the top tier schools, Ivies, elite, LACs. There are also schools that would love to have kids from NY if they are amenable to getting out of the north east. Are you open to schools in the south and midwest?

Thanks so much for the reply.
These are my stats

about a ~92 unweighted GPA
1920 SATs (670 verbal, 600 math, 650 writing) I plan on taking them again in october and boosting my scores to a 2000+ hoping for a 2100
Taking as many APs as my school allows
SAT2s:
Biology:740
U.S History:680

E.Cs
model congress 2 years as a delegate, 1 year as an advisor and next year as a supervisor
2 years of debate team
Arabic Club (introduction to written and reading arabic)
1 year of volunteer work

Id say the farthest south I could go would be VA and not too far west

Do you think you could suggest some places that give good grants?

I think that you should also look into taking the ACT.

I would also suggest that you spend the $14 US news premium on line edition. The online allows you to sort so you can look ar schools where you may be at the top of the range (most likely to give you a scholarship) in addition you can find schools where you fit confortably in the range that are need blind and meet 100% of your demonstrated need.

Some schools that you can look at that are need Blind and have scholarships are ;

Syracuse
Junianta
Bucknell
Goucher
Holy Cross (they have just become SAT optional)
Bard (sat optional and even has dates where you can come up apply and get an immediate decision)
Union
Beloit
Lawrence
