SLO GPA

So i found out that SLO uses 9th grade GPA. So as of now, i have a UC GPA 0f 4.08 which is 10-12. People are telling me that i am a match with this adn my 1460 to Cal Poly SLo’s Material Engr major.
However, if i redo my GPA including 9th, it is 3.95 capped and weighted. How will this hinder my chances now for MatE at SLO? is it a reach now?

Since SLO does not list the average GPA for each Engineering major, it is hard to determine where you fall for MatE but you are still within range with your CP GPA and your SAT scores are also on target. The best way to determine if you are competitive is to calculate out your MCA score. You want to have an MCA score of 4700 or higher for the best chances but a lower MCA score does not take you out of the running.

MCA information:

Academic MCA:

The maximum GPA they will use is 4.2, even though you can have a higher calculated CP GPA. A 4.2 is worth 2250 MCA points. Thus, multiply your CP GPA by 535.7 and you’ll get your MCA points for GPA.

The next biggest thing is test scores. The odd thing, likely because they wanted it to total a nice round number, is that the max score is 1650, even though the max SAT score is 1600. Multiply the total of your best SAT CR and your best SAT math by 1.03125 to get your MCA test points. If you took the ACT, they convert and vice versa.

The third largest section is the class rigor score, worth 750 points. In this section you get zero points for meeting the minimum admission requirements and adders for more than the minimum. The bonuses in order of power are (min semesters/max total semesters/bonus per extra semester/total possible bonus): math 6/10/125/500 (note: stats and finite do not count), lab science 4/8/50/200, English 8/10/50/100, foreign language 4/8/25/100, visual performance 2/4/25/50, no bonus points for social sciences or electives. As with GPA, you can actually score higher than the maximum, but 750 is the most they will count.

Finally, work and ECs, worth 350 points. Work (hours per week/bonus): 0/0, 1-5/20, 6-10/40, 11-15/60, 16-20/80, 21+/100, add 50 points if work is major related. ECs (hours per week/bonus): 0/0, 1-5/30, 6-10/60, 11-15/90, ‪16-20/120‬, 21+/150, add 60 points for leadership role.

There are also other Non-Academic Bonus Points:

CA vet/701, Hayden Partner School/700, faculty/staff dependent/700, service area of CP/500, either parent with some or no HS, but who DIDN’T GRADUATE FROM HS/300 (per parent).

Here’s how it works. Cal Poly does TWO “READINGS” one of academic only and one after adding additional non-academic bonus adders. The reason I put readings in quotes is that they don’t actually READ them. A computer tallies points and then ranks students.

I called Admissions at the beginning of the school year and was told Statistics did count toward Math semesters.

@BioShucks, is that regular A-G Stats or just AP Stats? My son got into Cal Poly taking A-G Stats as a senior, but he went in as an English major. It might not have been a factor. However, my younger daughter is on the same track for high school Math. I’m just curious how rigorous her course load she has to be. I know that many people believe that MORE is always better academically, but my wife and I preach academic/extra-curricular balance.

As a side note, she’s not sold on Cal Poly by any means, so it might not matter at all.

The admission person said either AP Stats or regular Stats would count as Math.

@BioShucks, thanks. Good to know.

I made the change to the MCA information I posted above so no disclaimer Stats is not counted if and when I post this information again.

Specifically the Admission rep told me to check and confirm our school’s Stats courses are listed on the CSU/UC A-G list. I did, and both Statistics and AP Statistics were in the Mathematics category.

If you took the ACT, it says convert, but what is the conversion?

You can find the concordance table here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19077718/#Comment_19077718

Note, the SAT changed, so the concordance chart is probably off a bit. It’s close enough to give you an idea though. Also, CP uses only English and Math from the ACT.

When they say they Superscore does that mean they would take the Math from the SAT and the English from the ACT? (I mean, I understand they take the best scores from multiple SATs or ACTs, but I don’t know if they would accept one from each.)

Superscore is the best math and english/critical reading from multiple sittings of the same test, either ACT OR SAT. Cal Poly takes it one step further and crossed platforms possibly taking the best math from one and the best english/CR from the other. It’s the so called Super Superscore.
