SLU vs WASHU

I'm a junior in high school & I know for. Fact that I'm getting bsn ( Bachelors in Nursing & Science.)
Me and a close friend wanna go right college together. She's really into washu but I'm not interested at all. I do my research and a lot of people have bad experiences there. I've heard they felt uncomfortable with the campus tour because the washu teachers and students make it seem like they ate the best ...better than anyone in st. Louis. But I read that the SLU kids are very welcoming and make them feel like they are actually looking forward to accepting students. Now I'm not rolling out wash u... I'm still gonna do a bit of research but right now...I don't think I'll even apply or take the tour. My heart is set on SLU.. Any slu/washu students out there who can give me your opinion?

First off, if you are definitely planning on studying nursing, Wash U is not the place for you since they do not have a nursing program! Barnes Jewish College has the Goldfarb School of Nursing housed nearby the Wash U medical campus, but that will not give you the on-campus undergraduate environment you would find either at Wash U’s Danforth campus or at SLU’s Frost campus. SLU does have a BSN program taught over at the medical campus, but the nursing students can live in the dorms on Frost and experience a true undergraduate college campus experience. Goldfarb nursing students cannot live in Wash U housing, and they do not have any on-campus housing near the actual teaching facilities.

As for comparing Wash U vs SLU as a whole, I think both schools are excellent schools but they are quite different, and it is hard to classify one as “better” for everyone. Both have strong pre-med and science programs with Wash U having a more selective student body population, but “more selective” does not automatically mean it is the “better” school. I have spent time on both campuses and I find the students both places to be bright, pleasant and polite. The two undergraduate campuses do have a different “feel” to them, with Wash U feeling more reserved and SLU seeming more outgoing and social to me, and I can easily see how different people could be more attracted to one over the other. The Jesuit influence at SLU makes a big difference which some people love and others may not. Wash U spends money like crazy on new buildings and facilities, which makes it definitely seem more upscale than the SLU campus which could definitely appeal to some folks, but may turn off others.

If your friend is stuck on Wash U, I am guessing she is not planning on studying nursing and must be interested in a different program of study there. If the two of you both want to go to school together, Wash U will have to be taken off her list. Besides SLU, you should consider other schools that have a nursing program and whatever your friend wants to study (big state schools like Mizzou or UIUC come to mind.)

I have a freshman at SLU. We visited about nine schools, and SLU was her first choice. WashU is a great school and has a beautiful campus, but it wasn’t right for her. WashU is definitely more reserved. I also feel like there is little school spirit and it’s pretty much only about academics. Not to knock it, but it does seem that biggest difference is the atmosphere of WashU is competitive and the atmosphere of SLU is cooperative. My daughter couldn’t be happier and has met a lot of wonderful, kind, intelligent, caring students at SLU.
