My first choice college, King's College, is a small school with only about 2700 students. I want to go to medical school, so I'm planning on majoring in biology and minoring in neuroscience. I also want to keep the possibility of applying to veterinary school on the table. The thing is that King's only had about 7 people go to medical school last year, and no one has applied to a veterinary school in two years. I know it's a small school, and I don't know how many people applied to medical school, but should this be concerning? As someone who would like to attend a competitive medical school, should I question the fact that such a small amount of people gain admittance to medical school from the college?

Can you tell us which King’s College you’re interested in? There seem to be various colleges with the same name.

King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania

The academics may be fine at the school.

However, the problem may be this: At schools that have few pre-health students, schools often don’t invest in having good pre-health advisors. Also, there probably will not be adequate pre-health student clubs/associations to belong to. Also, these schools usually don’t have “Pre-Health Committees” who will put together a “Committee Recommendation Package” for the Med/Dental/Vet schools that you would apply to.

What are your other school choices?

I really love Rutgers, but my parents are concerned that with so many people competing for admission to medical school there that I’ll risk not sticking out or not getting recommendations or help. Does anyone else see this as a risk, and the pros and cons of attending a school like King’s and a school like Rutgers for pre-med?

^^^

Find out how many juniors/seniors are “pre-med” at Rutgers (don’t count the frosh/soph since many wash out)

Find out how many apply to med school and are accepted (I wouldn’t count the ones with low GPA/MCAT scores)

Does Rutgers do Committee Recommendation Letters?

How is Rutgers premed advising?

I don’t see why it would be hard to get LORs. My sons are at a large flagship and they’ve had no trouble getting LORs from their profs.
