SMART Grant for One Semester?

A friend here at school asked me this question, and I had no idea about it since I'm not in any eligible majors, so I was wondering if you guys had a quick answer or knowledge of the matter.

She is a freshman but will have 60+ credits after this semester ends, so junior standing with over a 3.0 GPA. One of her majors is in Humanities, Science, and Technology (the other is Psych)...on our Fin. Aid's site her first major is listed as eligible for the SMART Grant. Even though it is ending after this school year, will she be able to get it for the semester? If so- how much? And are there any specific requirements like with ACG?

Thanks!

Yes, she can get SMART for one semester. She must be in a SMART-eligible major (CIP code assigned by the college must match a CIP code on the federal list), have at least a 3.0, and be classified as a junior or senior. The school may miss her due to matriculating from freshman to junior so quickly (and mid-year), so she should go to the financial aid office after grades post & she is actually a junior. Someone will review her file & award SMART if she qualifies. The award is $2000 per semester, prorated if less than 12 credits. Do realize that if she has institutional grants it is possible that the SMART grant may result in reducing institutional funding - and if she is awarded to cost of attendance, other aid (such as loans) may need to be reduced. Also - most important - she must have a Pell grant to be eligible.

Her major may NOT be SMART-eligible. The name is not important, the CIP code is. Often a name matches, but it’s the content that matters, and the CIP is reflective of the content. She will only know for sure by asking in the financial aid office.
