I’m looking for recommendations for a smart watch that can work without having a smartphone nearby. My D likes to run but prefers not to have a phone with her. Someone mentioned an apple product where the watch has text/phone capabilities but can leave the phone at home/dorm room. She has a Samsung brand phone and would probably never be more than 5 miles from her phone when running. Are there smart watches that work either with phone miles away or independent from a smart phone?
I can’t imagine any watch will be compatible with a phone 5 miles away.
Yes you can get cellular versions that don’t require you to be near your phone but have full phone function - I think it was Like $10 extra a month for the apple version on your cell phone plan
She can also get the Road ID app for free - she can set it up to notify a designated person when she’s heading out on a run and when she expects to be back - if she isn’t back I believe it sends a reminder to the designated person to check on her. - I can’t remember if it a,so tracks her location
Apple Watch. The cellular one works well. It works independently of the phone if the phone is not within the range. Not sure if you can type texts. You may be able to dictate to Siri. It cost a bit more to buy and you have to sign up with your carrier for $10 a month.

I find the easiest way to send texts via the Apple Watch (non cellular) is to use voice text. Speak a little slow and precise and it is an easy way to send a text
