SMFA/Tufts Combined Degree Anyone?

hello all. i applied to the joint degree between tufts and smfa, and was accepted to the studio arts portion. did anyone else apply for this degree? do you know when we'll hear back? what's the probability of getting in? is it really as rigorous as people make it sound, or is it just the commute that is a pain? any and all information would be great. also, if anyone else applied, i'd love to chat with you as to what you want to study, whether you think you'll go, etc. let me know.

Hi I'm a Tufts senior. While I'm not in the BFA and BA dual degree program, my boyfriend is.

As you know by now, you are accepted into either program seperately and then a percentage of those accepted to both the SMFA and Tufts are then accepted into the dual degree program. You'll hear back from TUfts at the same time as regular BS and BA applicants which is around April 1.

The program is hard because you're pursuing two completely distinct degrees at the same time, and the fact that the campuses are not next door to each other is an issue, but not an insurmountable one. You have to know how to organize your schedule eachsemester in such a way that you don't neglect your academics at Tufts and your nine hour studio courses at SMFA. It's just all about organizing yourself and not procrastinating... and of course, being utterly dedicated to both your studies at Tufts and your art at the SMFA

Hi, I’m a freshman, and I was so excited to go to Tufts with the SMFA dual degree. Within a month my dream became a disaster.
There is something the admissions won’t tell you. How many students DROP the program!! Even my dean admitted that it is a way of advertising the school to attract more people , something that looks good on a brochure but in actuality is not a great program at all.

SMFA SUCKS!! It’s far, instructors are horrible(depends actually , there are good instructors but many are not), the students at SMFA are horrible. Most of them are pot smokers, and they take really easy courses at Tufts (i.e intro art history, english) and say it’s hard. For instance, most SMFA students will take 3 academic course at tufts and do nothing else- they don’t even do art during those times and say they are struggling. Also, it takes 2 hours round trip to SMFA from Tufts. MOST dual degree admitted students end up dropping the art degree because of the incompatibility of the scheduling, geographical reason, and the level of art instruction

P.S seen many seniors who dropped out of the program during their sophomore/junior year and hated the school. They(and me) felt like we’ve been deceived

Is this true for everyone? Is there anyone who has a good experience?

I would not advise you to go to SMFA. At the portfolio studio I went to, SMFA was actually a blacklisted school, meaning that our high school seniors were strongly, strongly advised against applying. Like @lizzygreat said, SMFA is a very poor school that coasts on the brand value of Tufts. Tufts itself is a wonderful school, and I’m sure that in a decade or so SMFA will have improved, but at the current time it is not worth your money. The quality of student work (from graduated students) is very low, and I’m sure your talent will go to better use at other art schools.
