Smith Campus

Anyone want to describe the look of the Smith campus? It is REALLY tiny? I've visited Pomona College, and I didn't bother applying because it was way too tiny and the buildings were really plain. I know Smith has a small student body, but is the campus spacious? At Pomona, all the buildings were right next to each other, so that's why the campus felt suffocating.

Smith campus was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, who also designed Central Park in NYC and the landscape around the US Capitol building. So it’s very spacious with lots of green lawns, trees, and flowers. It’s set up on a small hill just above downtown Northampton, and it’s western border is Paradise pond and a tributary of the Conneticut river, so there’s lots of river views and you can go walking through the woods on the western side of campus.

The whole campus is 125 acres, though that includes the stables and the athletic fields. You can get from the very far end of campus builidngs (the Quad) to the other end (the gym) in about 15-20 minutes on foot, so to get to classes and stuff is a short walk, even though the grounds are big.

The buildings at Smith are all very different, because there’s a rule that buildings have to be built in the architectural style of their time. So there are some very modern buildings next to buildings with 19th century neo-medevial architecture. A lot of the architecture though is late 19th-early 20th century kinds of things (turrets, pillars, round windows, etc).

And actually, our student body is not that small. There’s around 2700 of us and we’re the largest of the women’s colleges!

Many people cite the look of the campus as one of the most attractive non-academic things about Smith (a close second to our nice housing), it’s really worth a visit if you’ve never been.

Wow, I’m really excited to see it! I plan to start visiting schools when all my decision letters come in. I can’t really afford to fly back and forth more than once.

So, how do you like Smith?
