***Smith Class of 2022 Applicants Discussion***

in but the aid is way too low :–( still grateful to have the acceptance as an international, though! congratulations everyone!

I am so excited for the admitted student day, hope to meet you guys there

Anyone aware of Smith parent discussion groups that aren’t Facebook? I’ve managed to never be active in Facebook and am not really interested in changing that at this point.

Did anyone receive an email notifying an UPs delivery?Smith is the only school thats accepted me within the past month or so, and I was wondering if it’s their acceptance packet or a very belated one from an early action school.

Ah never mind I got it. It is Smith!

It might be a t-shirt, I think some folks got one of those last week.

The UPS package is to notify you of your presidential scholarship! At least it was in my case. I do want a shirt tho :frowning:

The USPS package arriving today is your acceptance package. SMITH posted on twitter the photo of all the acceptances going out.

I just wanted to say that I received my package today with my FA award and I was very happy since I received a Presidential Scholarship. I will still try to appeal since my parent’s income dropped since 2016. It is far more affordable than attending the local UC that I always thought that I was going to end up at.

I do have a question for Smithies: I am on my parent’s health insurance, how easy is it to waive the school health insurance? The back of the award “small print” makes it feel like it is complicated (you have to do it each year at a specific time and if you fail to do it on time you will be charged). Anyone do this? Is there a minimum type that the require?

@Maschinenmädchen Congrats on the Presidential! My D is a firstie and has that too. Also, we did appeal FA and they may look at current income if you have documentation. Student Financial Services is a pretty friendly group, don’t be afraid to talk to them.
You have to waive the insurance by a specific date, but they give you plenty of warning and it is very easy. State of Massachusetts requires that you have some kind of coverage. Our is high-deductible but it was no problem.

@pauler80020 Thank you so much for your response. The insurance cost would be substantial for us, especially since I am covered under my mom’s work policy which is pretty good. I will just have to see how problematic it will be to have “out of state” coverage (at least for our insurance company: UnitedHealthCare).

@pauler80020 I forgot to add a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to your daughter too!!!

@Maschinenmädchen our coverage is out of state too, that should not be a problem.

And thanks, D is actually class of 2021 so on the home stretch of first year and still super happy. Smith is awesome!

On the health insurance thing: is on campus medical care easier if you have the school’s insurance? Any idea about how much it is?

As an overly protective parent (working on it!) I want my D to have a very low barrier to just dropping by a clinic/health-services because something feels ‘off’, and want to minimize forms/copays/hassles as much as possible. As long as we can give them insurance info and tell them to just bill us on copays, etc., I’ll use my own insurance. If the school policy is lower hassle, I’d be interested to know the cost.

@paraparent On my award letter it is listed as $2290 per year.

@paraparent If I am remembering the beginning of the year correctly, there is a smallish fee (<$250?) that you can pay to get them a little extra access to health services, but not buy their insurance. Also, Smith is right in town and there are docs available quite nearby who probably take your insurance. My D is seeing a Physical Therapist in town and it has been no hassle at all, it’s a 10-minute walk from her house. They actually send me the bill directly, no giant billing company like we get here… small town, Northampton

@paraparent Thanks!!! You are a lifesaver with all that inside information. It really helps a lot.

So I got my scholarship information - but they gave me absolutely nothing in grants, institutional aid. My parents make a little over 100k a year so the cost is absolutely insane. I have talked to multiple people and I did not hear of anyone receiving as little aid as I did- I wouldn’t have even bothered applying to Smith if they were going to give me $0 in aid :frowning:

This is just a cautionary warning to other thinking of applying to Smith- I understand that the cost is expensive and it was one (out of the two extreme outliers) of expensive schools that I applied to, but I don’t understand how or why they calculate their financial aid solely based on assets- my house is worth a lot, but it is because the area in which I lived grew insanely expensive in the 20 years since my parents purchased our home

@leafraindcollege My DD also got basically nothing in terms of grant-based aid. It is very sad for her (and me), because it really is her top choice school. I have no idea how they calculate need, but it seems crazy to me as well.
