@auracle Of the places you listed, Mudd and Cal Poly have the strongest reputation in engineering. Smith’s program is relatively new and thus doesn’t quite have the reputation and alumni pipeline to internships/jobs that the others might. Smith’s is a good program with really nice facilities and you’re probably going to get a lot more individual attention than at any of these places, aside from Mudd. The other benefit is it’ll be all women and so you won’t be subjected to a lot of mansplaining and talking down to you that you might get at a more traditional (and heavily male) atmospheres at a place like Cal Poly. If Smith’s environment, housing, female empowerment, and open curriculum aren’t that tempting to you, Cal Poly is probably your best option. Good luck!
@auracle Because aside from maybe Berkeley (which you said you didn’t want to go to) Cal Poly has the strongest reputation in Engineering and also has a tight alumni group. SLO is also a great little city.
For engineering @Auracle Berkeley has a huge reputation. But having Regents at UCLA is also huge. Obviously you will get more support and attention at Smith, and that is important. However if you are a Regents UCLA scholar, I think it’s clear you can handle the very difficult engineering programs at the UCs. It would be hard for me to justify the extra money for a private school when you have those two options.
@Imcherry yes there is. Its called ‘Smith College Class of 2022.’ Its a private group so answer a few questions (just to say that you have been admitted and you are gonna be respectful) and you’ll be officially invited in by an admin within a few hours. Links for various groupme chats (Midwestern Smithies, Prospective Smithies etc) are also in the group.
@“Maschinenmädchen” and @paraparent It is easy to waive the health insurance; however, is has to be done annually. My daughter has a major medical illness and so we also pay a small fee so she can have her labs covered at the health center. It is a supplemental policy that Smith offers. She has had to use the health center several times over the last two years and only one time was the service not covered and we were charged $175.00. It was worth it. She is able to get all of her medications through the health center and has not had to rely on local providers (other than a couple ER visits). She maintains her primary doctors at home and visits them on winter and summer breaks.
Because of her illness, we considered keeping our insurance through our employer and buying the policy through Smith. However, our insurance agent dissuaded us from doing this. As long as your coverage is nationwide, there is no need to change.
Where did you see this??? I looked all over her twitter and couldn’t find where she said that. Im suuuuper nervous to hear back and cant bring myself to work on any other supplements!!!
