TheMom and I were at a Smith Club event yesterday and we were chatting up an alum who said, "I had sisters who went to Wellesley but I went to Smith. I had daughters who went to Wellesley but the smartest one went to Smith." The intramural rivalry appears to have been going on for some time...this alum was from the Smith Class of 1939.

An independent college counselor today told me that if Hillary had gone to Smith instead of Wellesley she would have already been president.

haha I think she would have been president already too. She would be less of a politician and more of an actual person. (no offense to her or anything but i saw the debate last week. I'm so sick of people not answering the question addressed!) Okay that's just my personal opinion. Sorry if it isn't supported by other people on here.

I was actually wondering about this. Plus it's quite ironic because of a story i told my friend the other day. He's going to MIT and was trying to convince me I should go there. Actually, I think our shirts have a lot to do with this story; he was wearing the shirt that says "Harvard because not everyone goes to MIT" and I was wearing a shirt that said "Smith College". :)) Anyway, I told him "you know, I'll just try and go to my favorite school and I'll come to those nice Harvard parties on the weekend to make fun of the Wellesley girls. Maybe I'll stop over and visit you but I think the guys at Harvard have more of a....how do I put this....a life." Yeah, i'm not even a student but for some reason I don't like the Wellesley girls all that much. I just got this really rude, disturbing feeling from them when I visited whereas Smith was so homey.

We had quite the Wellesley bashing session when a bunch of us were sitting around in Bradley, waiting for our flights. :)

I love Smith and I could never go to Wellesley whereas a friend of mine adores Wellesley and gags at Smith. Ironically enough, she managed to convince me to apply to Wellesley but I was rejected and upon reviewing my common app, I'm sure that my "Why Smith?" essay didn't help my case too much.

Can I ask what everyone has against Wellesley students and why the rivalry exists? I'm going to ask the Wellesley forum to since I want to see both sides of the story.

i understand that but I mean what do you say in your "Wellesley bashing session". You don't have to say it if you don't want to. I'm just curious.

That was slightly tongue-in-check but some of the girls I was with didn't have great experiences at Wellesley, mainly regarding girls who were overly competitive (constant grade comparisons).

Well, the Smith/Wellesley thing is just an old story. We're both the top women's colleges in the nation (IMO), but they're Boston, we're Western Mass. They're Harvard, we're Yale. We have Gloria Steinem, they have Madeleine Albright. We've produced Republican first ladies, they've produced Democrats (why, oh why couldn't it be the other way around? :-) ). It's a silly rivalry really, but it's inevitable when you have two equally prestigious institutions with equally proud students and alums.

Karen, I thought you were going to tell a T-shirt story similiar to my daughter's. The day after she decided to attend Smith, she donned her new Smith T-shirt. But, because it was April, the day was a little chilly, so she put a zip down hoody over it and left the zipper open. All day long people stopped her at school to congratulate her on deciding to go to MIT. The sweatshirt had hidden the S and the H. :-)

well i read over everything i said yesterday and most of it is just like, :-!
I can't believe I said some of it. And the t-shirt thing was supposed to be a joke. Of course my friend didn't understand it since he's never heard of smith or wellesley (which I expected) but i guess the op reminded me of it.

Fun fact: Hillary Clinton was President of the Wellesley College Replicans back in the day. No really. They (the Repulbicans) are selling Hillary T-Shirts that commemorate the idea that she's already their president.

Never been to Smith, probably will have no reason to, but my general impression of Smithies' impressions of Wellesley (the ones who visit their friends, not the prospies) is "I thought everyone here was going to be a lot snottier then they are. Actually you people remind me of Smithies."

The kind of thing that makes me believe in redemption. Of course, back in the day, Everett Dirksen was my Senator, the kind of Republican you could actually talk to. I think they've gone the way of the dodo, the passenger pigeon, and the ivory-billed woodpecker, though perhaps the last few were carted off the Smithsonian for preservation and analysis.

I'm going to Smith next year, but I think Wellesley students are great. When I visited, they were extremely friendly people. I don't think they're "snobby." Actually, I think the students at all of the women's colleges I visited seemed quite similar.

Caught one on video, but really tough to tell if it is the real thing. Cornell folks have been really busy with this one! I've been a birder for about 25 years and have led numerous birding expeditions across RI. See, you learn something new everyday!

does it really matter which one a girl chooses? they're both great schools... it should be about the "fit" anyways ... if Wellesley's campus didn't "click" then that's fine! At least you recognize what you don't like
