Smith's English program

What is the quality of Smith's english program? How does it stack up against other schools? I'd really like to know, thanks. :)

i dont know anything about the english program, but i was SO EXCITED to see the Smith thread active that i had to post.

i'm getting REALLY excited about Smith. i think it would be fun to see who all on CC is applying, how many think they'll actually go to Smith, and any current students or parents of students who have fun stories to share. (quality of the English department included)

Smith's english program is very good, we're well known for it. It's one of the biggest departments on campus in terms of faculty, and it covers a wide variety of disciplines in English literature and writing. Plus the Smith network is full of people who work in publishing, teaching, writing, advertisting, and other fields that might be applicable to an English major, whcih comes in handy when looking for jobs later.

It's always been one of our strongest departments as English was one of the few "acceptable subjects" for women to study back in the old days. In fact, W.H. Auden was a visiting professor in the English dept. back in the 50s, and a young student named Sylvia Plath took her poems to him for advice (he told her to work on her verbs).
