I've been accepted to Pomona RD and will probably go visit on one of their Monday open house things. My parents are kind of worried about the smog, though. I know that after the winter rains it is beautiful and clear (like now), but how bad is it in late spring and early fall? I know that everyone says that the smog is getting better, but it just seems like a bunch of PR. Any comments?

I was just in LA (proper) a couple of weeks ago and flew over the Claremont Colleges area enroute to LAX. There definitely was smog in the city, but the skies were clear over Pomona.

Would you really not attend Pomona because of smog? Yikes. =x

haha why is smog always the first thing people worry about?

i live 5 minutes away and smog has never been a major problem for me. maybe it's because i'm used to it or something, but i've never really noticed a big 'problem.' usually the only time people notice it is during the summer (july, august). i wouldn't worry too much about it. you're not going to die from it or anything. haha

smog is mainly an issue in the summer, my S is not really bothered much by it and he does a lot of outdoor sports

As someone coming from a non smoggy area of the country, I was a little bothered by the smog, but I didn't have breathing problems or anything like that, so it wasn't a huge issue. I didn't know anyone who had a big problem with it, not even people with asthma. I do remember one day early in my freshman year, I was walking to class, and there was a haze between me and the building I was looking at. For some reason it suddenly became noticeable, and for about 3 seconds I thought there might be something wrong with my vision-- cataracts?! And then I realized that it was just smog. That was a particularly bad day, though. It's not usually like that.

Actually, the thing that is slightly nastier than smog is the fact that there is a dairy farm (I think that's what it is anyway) in some town not too far away. When the wind blows in a certain direction, a distinct odor permeates the campus-- cow manure, anyone? Of course, this is not all the time.

Certainly neither are huge problems that should stop you from choosing Pomona. If it is the right school for you, don't let smog or cows get in your way.

hm, that's an interesting concern. i've lived in california all my life, and i think that my nose has adapted to disguise smog to smell like barbecue.

seriously though, a little city like claremont won't be too smoggy.

it would never cross my mind to rate a college or factor in the level of smog that is in the area...maybe cause i have grwon up with it, but interestings question

yeah, smog should be last thing you should consider

come on everyone, don't give david a hard time just because he's concerned about smog.

for people not used to it, bad air can be one heck of a nuisance, especially if they have allergies or asthma. seriously, it was just an innocent question.
