Claremont used to have a bad rep for bad air, smog days, and all that. Now that my kid is looking at schools, he's expressing some interest in Pomona.

Does anyone have any idea if air quality is better than it used to be. My son likes to run and play tennis, and we're concerned about the air, there, especially for a kid who does outdoor sports.

Apparently it’s much better than it used to be. My D is an athlete (fall sport but active all year) and has never complained about air quality. It can be hot, but that’s something that has its positive side, too.

Los Angeles in general has much better air quality than it had years ago. I think that for those who are very sensitive or who have a health issue that affects their lung capacity, the air quality might be noticeable during the summer months…maybe. This year our summer has been relatively cool, especially compared to what people in the rest of the country were experiencing. For healthy athletes who aren’t even there in the summer, I doubt that it would be a problem. It’s certainly more pleasant than a muggy New England or Mid-Atlantic summer, imo.
My son never complained about the air or the weather at Pomona, even though it was pretty warm in September and much of October. Most of the time he expressed how beautiful it was and took advantage of the ability to spend time outdoors all year.

Thank you for that, SarahsDad. When I was there the air never really bothered me, but I’ve never really lived someplace with exceptionally clean air so I might be desensitized.

About 15 years ago, I use to fly into Ontario often to go to Palm Springs. I never knew there were mountains there!!! When my son was accepted to Pomona, I went to see the campus and was SHOCKED at the beauty of the snow capped mountains and clear air. In the 15+ times I have been there since, I have only seen one sort of smoggy day. My kids are so sick of me saying, “LOOK at those mountains!!!” It is now a family joke. The air quality is vastly improved in the past decade–don’t even worry about it.
