Smoke from Canadian forest fires (or others)

My goodness it’s bad here in the Northeast today! I’ve always felt terrible for folks in CA when the wildfires caused this kind of bad air, but did not expect it here, especially from fires quite a few hundred miles away. Definitely not normal.

It was worse yesterday where I was (Hudson Valley). I wore an n95 mask yesterday evening when I had to work on the farm. I didn’t in the morning, and my throat was burning

I can feel it here in MA. I have a scratchy throat, but could also be pollen. I canceled a PT appt today, it would have meant me to walk ~ a mile which normally isn’t a big deal but didnt want to risk it.

Concerned for husband, who stayed east to go to his 50th college reunion at Lehigh this coming weekend. He’s currently in Connecticut but heading into NYC to stay with his sister for three days. I’ve been begging him to wear his N95 outside as well as inside.

The only time we had anything even slightly like this in coastal San Diego is when a navy ship caught on fire and burned for a few days.

I am very relieved that at least this held off until after nephew’s wedding in Saratoga Springs last weekend.

Everyone take care and stay safe!

It’s terrible here in Eastern PA. I’ve never seen orange skies from fires in this part of the country before. Have only ever seen it out west. S22 is working for a landscaper and is working outside today. I hope they end early, I can’t even imagine working outside in this.

It’s bad! I grew up in So Cal as a youth and smog alerts were a near daily occurrence. If I spent time outdoors my lungs hurt. But the skies never looked as bad as they have yesterday and today. It’s creepy and horrible. I feel for the Canadians. But most of the smoke seems to have come south of the border.

We were just looking at these graphics. Poor Syracuse and all in central NY. This time lapse graphic shows the worst air is in that region. Ugh.

Getting darker and darker here in north Jersey. Never seen anything like this.

The Weather app on your phone should show your air quality index in your area and update. Mine is currently showing 155 which is worse than yesterday - Northern Ohio.

My asthmatic patients in NYC are staring to have issues, it is really crazy. I can’t imagine how people in the west deal with this on a regular basis. The entire sky is orange

Wow, noticing nothing in Quebec City.

it’s not great–but not terrible–right at the shore in NJ. My H works in the northern part of the state and said it is awful there today.

Supposed to head to Bucks Co, PA tomorrow for a getaway that was to include all sorts of outdoor activities. :frowning:

It’s really bad here in NYC - noticeably worse compared to this morning. I’m in Brooklyn Heights right now and the buildings just across the river in Manhattan are almost completely obscured. I’ve never seen anything like it.

We are 157 by nyc. The birds are so quiet (of course my windows are closed).

Funny you said that. We are not even that “close” and yesterday it was super hazy and I remember thinking like at 4pm “gosh, it’s so quiet out”. And there was no bird chirping.

The darkness, haze and orange air are depressing as well as being physically unhealthy. This is the time of year when I love being outside because it’s not hot yet, and now I’d rather have 90 degrees! D19 just started a couch-to-5K program, and I was so excited because I’m a runner and have always thought she would like it. I really hope this doesn’t last long.

My eyes, throat and nose burn, and I was only outside for 30 minutes to walk the dogs. We are 20 miles from Manhattan.

I think it’s supposed to clear out with a wind shift by tomorrow :crossed_fingers:

We just went over 200 where I am in North Jersey. Streetlights are on. Everything is orange.

Comment from a colleague: “It’s always bad before it gets a lot worse”.
