Smoking in college?

Nobody obeys these dumbass ordinances anyways. If someone says "you can't smoke here." They usually get shrugged off, it only takes less than 5 minutes to finish a cigarette.

Smoking is quite unprestigious.

Where I am at, smoking is a "cool" thing to do. As far as I am concerned the students are as immature as Highschool kids. They just can't wait to leave class to smoke, some even leave class early. It's definately a "social" thing though, so it makes it interesting to watch. They will make sure you are seeing them puff on that cig. Hey, if you smoke, you smoke. Honestly though, if you don't, you should never try it in front of a bunch of people. It sucks for nerds like me who are allergic and can't stand the smell. Also, my roomate smokes, so that is crazy. We get along and I am happy she is my roomate though, it could be worse.... I don't think the college looks at whether you're a non-smoker or smoker when placing you in dorms. Well, they didnt look at our information anyways... However it's all fun and games watching the new smokers try it like they are cool. I don't know, im easily amuzed I guess.-Gracie Denson

We just got back from my son's college where he told me 60% of the students smoke! I am not sure if this is an accurate stat. Does anyone have reliable data on the % of kids that smoke at various colleges? Smoking is only allowed in one dorm - the athletic dorm!! I did not see anyone smoking in my son's dorm, nor did it smell of smoke, so I believe that rule is respected, but there were piles of butts outside of every exterior door and kids would be sitting outside smoking. It really saddens me to see young people smoking, because it is such a dirty, unhealthy and expensive habit! I don't understand why they ever start. :(

Only a very small number of people in my high school smoke cigarettes (weed is the drug of choice), but I am slightly allergic to it, so I find it annoying. I hope I don't have a smoker as a roomie next year.

I don't know the exact %'s, but all I can tell you is I have never smoked (not cigarettes) as much as I have this week in my entire lifetime.

As far as I am concerned the students are as immature as Highschool kids. They just can't wait to leave class to smoke, some even leave class early.

Thats not immaturity - thats called addiction

I hate second hand smoke... But im all about second hand high

I rarely see/meet people who smoke

Some people who want to look cool because they smoke cigarettes feign addiction, like "Dang, I really need a cigarette!" and smoke a lot more than they should or even really want to, just to keep up appearances. Then, when they are done with the charade, is when they realize they have an addiction. This is usually after high school, or even after college, for those types of people. So a lot of it is immaturity. I have stopped smoking for long periods of time several times. While my body is definitely used to and enjoys nicotine, smoking is truly a choice for me. I can not have a cigarette just like I can not have a Cinnabon that's sitting in front of me. Its not a choice I enjoy making, but its not extremely hard. Perhaps I have a less addictive nature than some, but I think part of it is just moderation. The people I know who are seriously addicted to smoking got that way by feigning addiction to look cool.

, when they are done with the charade, is when they realize they have an addiction.

haha suckers - just wait til they realize they just gave themselves COPD later in life... that'll teach em to fake an addiction (yeah I'm in a bit of a mean mood right now)

i am not agree with smoke in cologe...

.

smoking is not evil or anything. it's just bad for your health, like alcohol, drugs and bad food.

I can smoke from time to time. I use it more as a social thing to do, I don't buy my own cigarettes but if someone wants to go smoke a cigarette and chat I'm open to it. I'm not addicted because I average less than 1 cigarette a every couple days and when I'm not around any smokers I don't feel any cravings to go and get one. Not everyone who smokes smokes to look cool or because they're addicted. Some people use it as a social tool same as going to get ice cream or going drinking with a friend.

im a social smoker.....ie i smoke when im drunk, like occasionally at parties and at bars etc.....so im unsure as to what to put for whether im a smoker on my residence questionnaire....i'm thinking that i'll put "no", since i rarely smoke, and i don't want to be interpreted as a chain smoker or anything. is that dishonest, or is "no" the more accurate response?

I am a smoker socially.

I would put NO on your reslife app if you do not smoke indoors. That is usually what that means.

**** the fascist anti-smoking ordinances. Death to the Chicago Clean Air Ordinance (it's going to shove a great diner out of business.)

i think they should tax the **** out of cigarettes.
anti-smoking ordinances... can be useful in some cases, but shouldn't be taken over board. Smoker/Non-smoker zone is fine.

CA kids do smoke, almost all the kids santa monica college smoke, rite outside the classroom too, but u dont have to worry about second hand smoke in class or library

they do tax the stars out of cigarettes, but that really doesnt stop people from smoking

There's a big difference between smoking in high school and smoking in college. In high school, you're underage so it's forbidden and cool for a lot of people. In college, people just do it to meet a need and it's not cool.

I myself hate smoking and have never done it.
