SMU Applicants CO '15

Who else is applying to SMU for Fall 2011? I am! I'm really excited and I hope I can go!

I'm hoping to study Anthropology/Pre-med. So other applicants, tell me about yourselves! What are you planning on studying? Are you considering hilltop scholars or the honors program?

I was in the honors program at SMU. You get to stay in Virginia Snider which (in my opinion) is the best dorm for people who want to study. I was on the Virginia side. The English classes you’re required to take in the honors program are significantly more difficult than the regular English classes but they are also more meaningful. The main downside is you don’t have as much freedom in electives since you are required to take a certain number of honors electives, and the list for honors electives is significantly shorter than the regular list.

Your degree will say “Honors in Liberal Arts” when you graduate though.

Most of the honors students, especially engineers, end up dropping out of the honors program so it’s really an achievement to stick with it.

Many of the honors electives are really quite fascinating. And honors professors are less likely to treat you as intellectually inferior in my experience.

I plan on applying and majoring in Business at Cox. I would love to be in the honors program, as I really find a more studious environment enjoyable. Do you know what the admissions to the honors program consist of?

Agree, Virginia Snider is the best place to live if you prefer a more studious environment. There are several groups who can live in Virginia Snider. You can live there as a BBA Scholar, or as a University Scholar.

@ samiiilee:
Since you are applying as a freshman to Cox, you could be a Cox BBA Scholar and you could also be in the University Honors program as well. You should check out both.

The Hilltop Scholars is yet another honors program and they live in the Perkins and Smith dorms, I believe.

Good luck to you samiiilee.

Another great part of being in Virginia Snider is sometimes your English classes will be in your dorm.

My English class was literally about 20 feet from my room at 9 am. I often literally rolled out of bed and walked to class still in my PJs. And if you forget an assignment, no need to sprint back to your dorm.

I’m sure the admissions have changed since I was there (I would have applied in 2003), but I’d say anyone who is an ‘A’ high school student with decent standardized test scores and at least some leadership in high school has a good shot for honors program.

I’m applying as a safety, my sister went there so I’m familiar with the school and I know I have a decent shot at scholarships/honors. If I get into BBA scholars it’ll move into my short list.

Hey, SMU as if now, is definitely 1st choice. I LOVE the city of Dallas and it’s not too far away from home (Austin). I want to double major in Spanish and Anthropology! I don’t think I want to be a part of the honors program. I really hope i’m able to get in! By the way how far up is SMU on your college list?

SMU was high on my son’s list until he visited TCU and SMU this fall. He is very qualified for both schools and will be an Honors student. TCU knocked his socks off. Warm, community feeling, tons of school spirit, better business school and now the Hornfrogs are going to the Rose Bowl. I love the network that SMU provides its graduates though – that is hard to beat.

Interesting. My son was planning on applying to TCU as well. After the visit he no longer had any interest.

What basis do you view TCU’s business program better then SMU? Honestly, in our area TCU is viewed as a school for kids with lower stats.

It was in the Annual Business Week magazine college issue. They were ranked #30 and SMU was ranked #31 - which isn’t a big deal The big deal was that in the Executive Recruiter Survey, TCU got a 100 and SMU got a 38. Kind of interesting. Yes, I think you are right though. In the past TCU didnt quite have the academics that SMU has - although neither school is highly selective.

Thanks for the info. My view of SMU is that it is well connected with the Dallas business community which is substantial. This fact I have checked independently. Recognize that is is not a highly selective school but it does have its advantages and I think it is up and coming,

I agree RynoDad. I think both SMU and TCU are great schools, and both up and coming!

I’m applying as an Advertising major (hopefully with a minor in business management) and I live in dallas. SMU was more of a back up school for me originally, but after visiting and taking some classes there, I really fell in love with it. It’s now my top choice and I’m glad I applied early =) Can’t wait to hear back from them!
