Congrats to all!
@momoboys Our son was deferred at TCU and SMU, too - kind of scratching our heads. He’s 3.5 GPA (from a highly competitive high school) and 29 ACT, strong leadership ECs. Not sure if his pride will be too hurt to consider them if he gets in later.
Congrats to everyone who was admitted!
@Watch37 We were deferred and were NOT applying for FA, so I don’t think that impacted the deferral.
To those of you that asked when they would notify of major - NEVER - SMU is a general admission school that does not assign majors until after you start …
This came from the Admissions Dept: SMU is single entry. He, like all SMU freshman, will start out as an undeclared student and will begin the pre-requisites for the major he wants to study. Once they are complete, typically during sophomore year, he will be able to declare his major.
My son was accepted EA with a Second Century Scholar!!
GPA - 4.3 Weighted, ACT - 30. SAT - 1380
I think like 11 AP classes and a ton of leadership awards like Eagle Scout…
He’s super excited! Really wants to be in Cox School of Business but may need more $$ because still significantly more than UT/A&M. But is anxiously awaiting to hear from UT, as he does not know if he will be accepted to UT.
DS was accepted w/distinguished scholar award of $25,000. He had a 1380 SAT.
We did submit the FAFSA, but are full pay.
The school is too expensive for us even with the scholarship.
@citimama9 Yes he did complete the FAFSA and the CSS Profile for any need based aid that he could possibly be eligible for at SMU. I am confused as well as he has been accepted at all others he applied to (pending TAMU) with some nice scholarship offers. I will leave it to him to decide if he wants to continue pursuit of SMU acceptance or move on to other options. He’s a good kid and will succeed no matter where he ends up. I hope the same is true for your daughter.
One note is that SMU’s enrolled student average ACT was 30 last year and they are striving to get to 31. To have an average of 30 for enrolled students, they probably have at least a 31 average for admitted students.
I believe SMU is far better than a state school. The room and board is quite a bit more but apparently it’s top notch. The personal attention and ability to double major is also a big plus.
@Frankie2011 It’s just confusing when our kids have gpa’s and test scores that are within range, have great EC’s etc and are deferred. Not sure what they can do differently in the next couple of months to change things.
@citymama9 I agree. I am wondering if your daughter has any other special circumstances which may require them to give her application more time to review. I am starting to think that might be the case for our son. He will graduate in May (2 weeks before HS grad ceremonies) with his Associate in Arts, General Studies. He will essentially be done with his first two years so I am not sure if this has any impact or not. He really loves the idea of SMU engineering but not thrilled about the price tag so it might end up being okay for him. And who knows…maybe he’ll go there to get his Masters. Keep your spirits up! These kids have done amazing things and they will end up where they belong. Our oldest son just finished his first semester at Texas Tech on Presidential Scholarship. He was miserable the first few weeks and really struggled but he loves it now and is very happy that he chose that school. The 8+ hour drive is tough for me but he’s happy and that’s all that matters!
Just wanted to post that I was emailed about applying for Dedman College Scholars. I was accepted early action and received the Provost scholarship.
@citymama9 I am thinking that possibly they received a higher than expected qualified set of applications this year, which threw things off base a bit. My D was accepted thankfully, but without any merit money, which we really thought she would get. I think things went to a whole new level. Good luck to your D!
Deadline has passed for Class of 2023, but I highly suggest future classes play around with raise.me. In most cases, DD’s scholarship levels are higher with institution merit aid, but as a final backup for those that find themselves on the bubble without ANY scholarship, it would be nice to have taken the time to fill out the raise.me, especially for SMU.
Hello,
I recently got accepted to SMU and I was wondering if anyone could answer some of my questions? (FYI some of these might be specifically for current students)
- How is college different than high school academically? (ie. schedule, course work, rigor, etc)
- Do you know any Business Direct or Pre-Business students? Did they have any trouble getting into Cox?
- Anything you wish you knew about SMU before you got there?
- Do you enjoy living on campus? Have you ever been in a sorority or frap? If so, pls describe your experience.
- What clubs/orgs do you recommend joining? Is there anything to do off-campus?
- Have you ever studied abroad? If so, pls describe your experience?
Would really appreciate your feedback!
My DS was offered the Discovery Scholarship today $9k/year or $36k total. This is already in addition to getting the $25k/year or $100k for Distinguish scholarship. CompSci major, GPA 4.3. SA
Our son was also accepted to SMU, Texas, Texas A&M and Rice so tough decisions ahead. SMU is far better than the state schools? I have no idea where you came up with that. SMU is a really good school, especially if you plan to have a career in Dallas. UT Business and Engineering schools rank in the top 3 - 5 in the country. Their accounting is either 1 or 2 with Illinois each year. Goldman Sachs ranks UT the top school in Texas to recruit from. A&M engineering is also at the top and their school of business is considered at par or better than SMU. Be careful in shooting of subjective statements as their are a lot of impressionable young kids reading this page. Appreciate your preference as probably an alumnus but the market does not share in the least your position.
SMU is too expensive and not a better value than other Texas schools. For business, undergrad doesn’t matter as much, your MBA school is the one that really matters. We recently met some Mccombs undergrads at an alumni’s wedding party, ones who are doing well, had to get a masters from either Harvard, Wharton or Stanford. Not a single one recommended business undergrad. All recommended going for STEM or Economics undergrad with only exception of business undergrad if kid gets into Wharton undergrad.
@Riversider can you elaborate onto why someone wouldent want to get a business degree for undergrad ? It is far better than just getting a associates or an english degree or something artsy
Yes, I would also like to hear more @Riversider and other college grads… is BBA not a useful degree?
