SMU Early Decision for Fall 2022 Admission

Not clear whether deferral candidates are competitive for merit aid, but based on lack of response and history, probably not. We are in the same situation. Thinking of moving on to other options.

Daughter got in to SMU but deferred to business school. No mention of merit. I guess the deferral takes the merit off the table.

Accepted into the business school (Cox), already a Distinguished Scholarship recipient

You heard last week she got in? But today that she was deferred from Cox?

Not OP but they released Cox decisions today, general university decisions were last week.

Thank you. Do you know what the admit rate is for Cox? My daughter applied RD.

Iā€™m not sure to be entirely honest! I know they aim for 300 enrolled students to be Business Direct (admission to Cox but no scholarship), and then 100 to be BBA Scholars (admission to Cox and likely scholarship). That is enrolled students though, not accepted. Itā€™s somewhat difficult from what I understand. They look at extracurriculars and the whole application. Average SAT for BBA was a 1496 last year (2020).

I was admitted for Business Direct ranked 5th in my class, max rigor (though not many APs), a 1460 SAT (def my weak spot), and then ten extracurriculars with my strongest being having my own LLC, class president, FBLA state president (+ one other state officer position in 11th, national council position 12th, chapter president and 2x chapter VP), 3 seasons of a varsity sport, 4 year key club member, 4x fbla state champ, 1x fbla nationals runner up, 3 year gymnastics managerā€¦thatā€™s most of it.

And I only got Direct. I think itā€™s somewhat selective, not going to complain. I doubt I have a chance at the Presidentā€™s Scholarship though now considering I couldnā€™t even get BBA and was a Distinguished Scholarship recipient (25k yearly vs the 30k Provostā€¦though Provost I have not seen ANYONE with a 1400-1490 get. Even some 1500 scorers are getting Distinguished and I know all Provost get a Presidentā€™s Scholarship invite for the essays).

Best of luck to your daughter! I might turn down my spot in the next month or so as Iā€™m waiting on a full ride scholarship notification to Central Michigan in January, so if I got that I would have no reason to keep my SMU acceptance. I supposed SMU accounts for that though hahah!

suppose* Bad grammar is not going to get me too farā€¦

My daughter got into Cox without BBA scholarship but very happy for her. She was awarded Distinguished Scholarship last week.

My son just got admitted into Cox Business Direct. He was admitted Friday as a distinguished scholar. He is also IB.
The distinguished plus IB scholarships should be about $32,500.

Does anyone know if this is pretty much it for merit aid? Any idea if more can still come?

Unfortunately, $32,000 itā€™s still not enough to justify him attending.

All Provost Scholarship recipients get an invite for the Presidentā€™s Scholarship?

Does anyone know approximately how many Provost Scholarship recipients there are?

Based on past threads, they get an invite to fill out a couple essays that the committee then picks from to select the 60 or so finalists. Itā€™s not an automatic interview invite though.

Yes, exactly.

Does anyone know when candidates are invited to apply through the essays for Presidential?

I just found out I got a 34 on my December ACT (had a 1460 SAT previously). Do yā€™all think I could update SMU and see if I could have reconsideration for BBA Scholars and Provost? Would it be weird if I sent a polite email?

I would send the updated score and an email informing them of the new score. Most schools reevaluate with updated scores.

My daughter applied to Cox RD. Will she be eligible for any merit aid or scholarships, or is that sort of aid only given out to students who applied EA or ED?

I heard itā€™s by invitation in January. Itā€™s a holistic review.

Does anyone know the percentage of admits that are awarded some kind of merit scholarship? If your kid was admitted and doesnā€™t qualify for any financial assistance, are they really expecting parents to pay full sticker price for tuition?

Kid was admitted last week to Dedman, but no merit scholarships were awarded. He contacted his admissions counselor who indicated all awards wouldā€™ve been mentioned in the second paragraph of the offer letterā€”he wasnā€™t offered anything.
