Absolutely. According to the website, BBA Scholars get Cox specific funds and all types will be admitted in RD. As long as one applies by January 15, all merit based scholarships and financial aid is available.
My son was deferred at Cox. He didn’t check the portal but I did after seeing the posts on this string. He’ll look into majors in Management Science in Engineering or Econ with Financial Applications to see if those work if Cox doesn’t come through. Maybe 30 transfer in each year after enrolling.
I’m not sure how many get in after being deferred. I’d imagine the best chances go to those who had strong first semester grades, a higher test score, a significant achievement or have been involved in business related activities that weren’t in the application. SMU looks for evidence the applicant really wants to major in business.
In the fall of 2020 class, there were 1529 entering freshmen. Of those, 499 were deemed to need some financial aid as determined by FAFSA. Of those 1030 who “didn’t have need,” 699 were offered scholarships or grants. 56 of those received athletic support.
348 of the 499 “needing aid” were offered scholarships or grant aid.
HAHA I did not receive an invite for President’s! Did get an email about Hunt though mentioning something about my AO referring me, though I’m sure it was a pretty common thing. I guess they are still in office, so I’m going to email with my updated ACT score, but I doubt it’ll make much of a difference.
My hypothesis is that all the Provost Scholars receive invites to President’s and that they MIGHT pull a few distinguished scholarship recipients. You fill out the essay prompts to be considered for an interview, and they pick about 60 people to interview. The median SAT for that is a 1500, meaning there is still a decent number of people below that.
If anyone received Provost with a score in the 1400-1490 range, please reply to this thread. That would support the idea that it is only Provost considered, as right now I feel like only people with 1500+ have been getting Provost (and even then, some low 1500 scorers are getting Distinguished).
There must be multiple waves then for the invites. I’m sure she’ll get one though if she’s Provost! It’s a bit weird though that they haven’t notified all of Provost recipients or even just emailed everyone they are planning on sending the essays to.
I suppose we could be on the right track with the Hunt email. Did your daughter have a personalized acceptance letter? Mine mentioned my state level leadership super specifically which was neat, but I didn’t get Provost. I’m just really hoping I have a chance to fill out those essays, I love SMU! Just not the price tag.
Everyone gets a personalized acceptance letter. My son’s letter mentioned course rigor, dedication to sport (had awards on all state team) and breadth of activities. It’s cool that they give some insight into what was appealing besides test scores and grades.
I would guess that a few people get PS invites that went test optional. I hope you get a PS invite but if not, I hope you nail the Hunt process and that’s enough for you. They are both special programs. I’ve noticed with my Soph Pony that there are a lot of special opportunities.
My son who was accepted as a Distinguished Scholar and accepted to Cox as a BBA Scholar was sent both the Hunt email yesterday and the invite to complete the two essays for PS today. He has a 1490 SAT and 3.98 unweighted, with many ECs and leadership.
My daughter did get invite for Presidential. She was pretty bummed earlier, but then I just checked my e-mail and it was sent to my husband and I instead of our daughter.
Actually, they don’t do a personalized one for everyone! I have two friends that were accepted, and they had different letters, but they weren’t specific. One had “The Committee was impressed with your ability to balance a rigorous course load while also committing time to a variety of leadership positions,” and then the other had “The Committee was truly impressed by your dedication to your academics as well as your numerous extracurricular activities.” They probably do personalized for a good amount though, but to my knowledge it’s not everyone.
I think you’re right with a few of the invites going to people who are test optional. I also know not everyone who received Provost got the Hunt email, and some Provost have not gotten a PS invite. I would like to think there are several waves, but no idea. I feel that there likely is, as the RD applicants still have a chance. But for everyone who was accepted EA, it would make sense for anyone SMU wants to consider to have already gotten the essay invite. I saw a screenshot of the email and the due date is January 3rd I believe. Maybe they have a couple waves with different due dates; that would seem a bit strange though for EA.
My AO did get back to me about my updated test score and added it to my file; I’m also able to be reconsidered for BBA Scholars which is fortunate.
And thank you, I really hope I still have a chance too! I need to talk to my parents and see if they somehow got an email and I didn’t (though the chances of that are highly unlikely). Hunt would be amazing and I’m definitely going to apply, but even if I am fortunate enough to receive it I’m not sure if I would be able to attend…I don’t qualify for FA and my parents are weird with how much they will contribute! It varies with the college and there’s no rhyme or reason to it.
Congrats to your son and good to know! I was accepted as a Distinguished Scholar but not as a BBA Scholar. So PS was sent a day after Hunt? I was sent Hunt yesterday (December 21st), so a day after your son, so maybe I have a shot at getting PS today. I doubt it though, unless they have different waves.
Even the variation in acceptance language is unique relative to other admissions my kids have received. My daughter’s letter mentioned GS Gold award.
Hunt gives special access to Tate and other events and probably some leadership opportunities. Plus $46k per year. However there are only 20 per year and they want a diverse class of majors. Good luck to everyone!
For all you Cox admits deciding among options, I have recruited at Cox BBA for many years. Now that I’m at a smaller company, the placement office sends me resume books of available students. They also send me resumes for part-time jobs. I know others that hire Cox BBAs part-time and for internships. Quite responsive.
