I’ve never heard of the discovery scholarship. Congrats
My daughter received it, too. We were pleasantly shocked because it was out-of-the blue. The email says it’s for students with “exceptional potential” in engineering and the sciences.
It’s my understanding that things like Discovery, BBA, and Dedman are all merit awards coming from the school-specific endowments, and are awarded separate from Second Century, Distinguished and Provost…The latter are usually in admissions letters…the others come separately. Presidential and Hunt are totally separate also, and have their own processes. University Honors and Hilltop are also apparently separate…but being academically qualified for UHP does seem to be a pre-requisite of some sort (qualified, not necessarily accepted) for some of the merit programs.
My husband and I received it on our e-mail. She did not receive the Presidential e-mail or the Discovery. No idea why she isn’t receiving anything through e-mail. Her e-mail works fine, just SMU e-mails are not coming to her. She did receive her acceptance through her e-mail.
Have any engineering majors been offered Lyle Scholars Program Scholarships? My son received Distinguished Scholarship with his admit, and Discovery Scholarship from Lyle Engineering a few days later. We are wondering if he is still in the mix for Lyle Scholars Program Scholarship or if that would have come with or instead of the Discovery Scholarship offer.
We haven’t received anything about Lyle Scholars.
Maybe Lyle Scholars decisions are still to come? Does anyone know if Lyle Scholars is just a scholarship or if there is a programming aspect to it like BBA Scholars that offers other special opportunities, classes, advising, etc.?
My current SMU engineering freshman received Provost with admission, Discovery a few days later and then Lyle scholarship a few days later than that last year. There is not any extra programming or honors, it’s strictly financial scholarship. Happy to answer any questions about our experience so far
Thanks so much for the helpful info.! What is your freshman’s major in engineering and how has the experience been so far academically & socially? Also, has your freshman utilized any of the resources of the Hart Center for Engineering Leadership and/or gotten involved with any of the engineering clubs? Would love to hear about his/her experiences - thanks!
I would love to hear the answers to the same questions ResearchOne asked. Also, how is your engineer fitting in all of the common curriculum courses, and how many required courses are part of the common curriculum? I have read up on it, but honestly, I am a bit confused about what exactly is required. Thank you.
His experience has been good so far. He is much more of an academic kid than a social kid but he’s finding his people! His major is computer science. It’s very advantageous to have personal relationships with the professors vs large classes in other schools where you are just a number.
He hasn’t done anything with the Hart Center yet. He is a member of the Software Development Club (I think he’s even a VP)
I am confused by the Common Curriculum too! he is taking the writing classes that all freshmen are required to take both semesters of this year. He had a very good professor for that class last semester and expects this one to be great too. He is also taking ASL ( sign language) as his foreign language requirement. Other than those, I think a lot of the other required common curriculum classes are covered by AP credits and/or classes within his major (I don’t really know - he and his advisor have a tentative scheduled plan laid out)
Overall, having small classes (most of his classes were under 20 students and the largest one was 34) is such a plus! He has also gotten to know several of the professors in engineering because he took the Intro to engineering class (semester long robot building group project). It was brutal but he learned so much!
@Pebbles116 may also be able to answer some engineering questions if s/he is still posting.
@KEHTX1 great insight. How did your son find his roommate? He has found like minded students in Lyle?
He found his roommate on the SMU class of 2025 Instagram page. That is where the vast majority of kids find their roommates.
So glad to hear your son has had a positive experience so far at SMU. I agree that the small class sizes make a huge difference. My son is a computer science major as well and is hoping to get involved in several clubs related to cs, so that is nice to know your son has already gotten engaged in one already. All the best to him!
Do you know when students are notified if they are in the University Honors Program? Does that notification come out with the EA acceptance or is it after President’s and Hunt Scholarships are awarded?
Last year, someone posted that they received an email on Jan 6 notifying parent and kid about admission to UHP. In 2020, on Jan 13 someone mentioned that they recently received admission to UHP. I believe UHP gives some special classes, especially in first year, priority registration (not a huge deal but good for peak times/professors) and UHP designated housing.
Any idea how many kids are actually invited to apply for the presidential? I know they interview about 60, but I’m wondering about the number before that. Thanks.
They just sent out the UHP acceptances! Got an email at 3:35 PM
My daughter got UHP invite email today, 1/4/2022.
Random question, but did your daughter get an invite to fill out the Presidential Scholarship essays? I got into UHP but never got the PS invite (and likely never will, as I believe they won’t do another wave for EA accepted students).
