Thanks for posting
FINALLY got an award package. Still no email notification though

Where did you financial package show up? Where do I go to find it?

Created an account just to clear up some misinformation. I am a Lyle professor and an academic advisor. The Lyle School of Engineering is NOT direct admit, like Cox or Meadows. You are admitted as a pre-engineering major, then once you complete a subset of classes/requirements you can officially declare your Lyle major.

Students from outside Lyle can also declare a Lyle major, even if they are not a pre-engineering major. For example, we have MANY students who start as statistics or economics who declare a Lyle major once they have completed the subset classes.

Cox and Meadows, on the other hand, ARE direct admit, meaning that in order to pursue a Cox degree, you have to be admitted prior to your freshman year. You can’t change majors into Cox or Meadows once you’ve started at SMU, like you can in Lyle.

I am happy to answer any questions you all might have about SMU, academics, advising, etc.

Thank you for the current info.

Lyle was indeed direct admit in 2018 - when there was a completely different Lyle “admissions team” including Mickey Saloma -we attended several Engineering recruitment events on campus. In her acceptance packet our D received a Lyle-specific merit scholarship, a drawstring bag filled with Lyle things and a t-shirt. I specifically recall Mickey saying during his presentation “you can transfer OUT of Lyle but it’s much tougher to transfer in”. She was “in” the Lyle school from the start (was assigned a Lyle advisor during the family orientation over the summer) then declared her major the 2nd year.

Great experience for her, she really enjoys it - sounds like maybe they flipped Cox and Lyle now as direct admits.

Yes all of that is true
but that’s not “direct admit.” Your daughter still had to meet ALL subset requirements in order to declare her actual Lyle engineering major, which typically happens at the end of freshman year/first semester sophomore year. Direct admit means you are ALREADY a declared Cox or Meadows major, you don’t have to meet any subset requirements. Lyle has a dedicated team of pre-engineering advisors, which your daughter was likely assigned to one of them, then once she was officially declared, she was transferred to her major’s academic advisor.

Just received an update, my D has been formally accept to the Cox School of Business after 3 weeks on the business school waitlist. Good luck to everyone on the waitlist to business school.

Anyone seen what the schedule is for the fall as to when school starts and moving into dorms? Trying to schedule one last family vacation.

Stampede 2021 - August 19-22
Monday, August 23 is first day of classes

I believe dorm move in is august 17-19 and then Stampede (freshmen orientation type thing) is at some point august 20-22 with classes starting August 23

Thank you for the info and I found the link. That is going to come fast!

Is there a link that lists all the important things dates?

This link looks very helpful for new students. Otherwise, classes starting August 23 and prepare for dorm move-in around August 17. Here’s another link about orientation.

Thanks so much. I will save these links.

My son gained admission to SMU through EA, but did not get in Cox which he had set his heart on. Now we are last min trying to decide btw a CA school which he has the acceptance to business school, Or economics/data science at SMU for first year(then attempt for internal transfer). What are the chances that he could transfer into Cox starting sophomore year?

I would also encourage your son to look at Management Science in Lyle and then do a double major with Economics with Management Information Applications or Data Science. As long as your son doesn’t want to do venture capital or investment banking, your son can get a job in pretty much any area as a Cox student would with a Management Science degree.

It is funny you mentioned Management Science in Lyle because he did receive an email from the dean earlier in the admission cycle trying to persuade him to switch his application from Cox to Lyle. But for my son, VC is his dream (for now) and we are from Austin area. If he chooses CA school, it definitely is going to cost us more to send him there. Sometimes decisions can be purely based on emotions. As a parent, I felt SMU is a better fit for him though.

FWIW, advice I got about private equity was to focus on understanding companies and how they work. Be an engineer. Or go into consulting and then get an MBA from a top school. Or do accounting, know how to tear apart financial statements, be an auditor or work in a bank’s credit department and go to grad school (or not).

Some of the BBAs (non-SMU) we’ve hired in corporate finance have hardly known Excel. Some self teach themselves well. Others have less initiative. My advice is to take an Excel modeling course.

My D just denies the acceptance (Cox school of Business), so good luck to whoever on the waitlist!

Those of you that were accepted ED and then into Cox, did you have both potential majors listed in the Cox School of Business, like accounting & finance? Or do you have to list a second choice major outside of Cox? How did it work?
