One of my friends’s son went there last year awarded full-ride(SMU President Scholarship), after he was disqualified by physical exam for the application to Air Force Academy.
Hello all! I am an admitted EA applicant and applied for the presidential scholarship. I know some have recovered their notifications, but I have not which is worrying. Based on this and other forms, I believe the notifications are coming out an different days. What I mean is that I think they’re rolling or by region. I live in California for reference. I received the Distinguished Scholar merit award with my acceptance and was also admitted into the honors program. I really am hoping that I advance to the next round. Wish me luck!
Hi there. I was deferred from smu December 17 and have heard nothing since. Applied Oct 30 ED. I also got into Baylor with a nice scholarship pkg.
When did you apply and were you deferred or you haven’t heard anything since applying?
My daughter applied and got in EA to SMU (heard Dec 17).SMU offered no scholarships. She learned today that she did not make it as a Hunt Leadership finalist. She applied EA to Baylor as well and was accepted w a pretty good academic scholarship. She is also a finalist for their Invitation to Excellence (but I think it’s a long shot). SMU was her first choice (and she even paid her $700 deposit), but she is re-thinking that since getting an offer from Baylor.
I think you should email your admission counselor and ask what the deal is! I think that you were deferred and not rejected is a good sign…not to mention you must be a pretty competitive applicant if you got a scholarship from Baylor!
Can you pay deposits to multiple colleges and only eventually go to one of them? I understand the deposits will be forfeited.
Good morning. I finally caved and called and all the Presidential scholarship finalists have been notified. Sorry! My daughter was also hoping to be a finalist but she is thrilled to be a finalist for the Hunt. Guess we are all just trying to get all the information to make the best decisions, which means knowing cost, honors program slots, etc. Good luck to everyone on this thread as we continue this journey to the finish line…May 1!
Sorry if I sound naive but the whole process is new to us. I wanted to know why you paid the deposit without getting the financial package. What is the advantage of paying the deposit earlier? We cannot pay this amount without knowing the financial package.
Most people choose to wait until they hear hack from all their schools and financial aid packages. If someone really wants to go somewhere, they can pay the deposit which equates saving their spot for the class. I don’t recommend paying a deposit until you’re 100% sure because most of the time they are non-refundable.
Thanks for the reply. I didn’t understand “saving the spot for the class”. If the deadline is May 1st then what is the point of submitting the deposit that early.
@Simba25 Two friends’ kids were deferred from EA/ED. I tell the friends that their kids should continue to demonstrate interest and update their profile with their first semester grades, awards, etc. if it enhances the application. Based on the last three years, deferrals have received their decisions from March 8-11.
I don’t see any reason to deposit until you’re sure. It can help with housing or registration at some colleges but it doesn’t seem to matter with SMU. Both worked out great for my D20. Although there is a matching service, she found her roommate through Instagram.
Thanks for the info.
Good morning. I just logged into my daughter’s account where it shows what scholarships were awarded and see that she also is a Discover Scholar which is worth another $9000 per year in addition to the Provost. I don’t think she got an email announcing that, or she missed it so you all may want to check. Good luck everyone!
Did you log onto mySMU or the applicant portal? Thanks!
Congratulations! That’s a nice surprise. STEM major? Think it must be GPA based award.
My D20 just became an official sorority member today. No longer a pledge. Heard more sophomores than normal will live in the house next year. I can only guess it’s due to Covid concerns. Typically only juniors and seniors have room. BTW my daughter’s roommate didn’t rush and they’ll be roomies again next year.
It was under mySMU in the financial aid box. My daughter then found a really old email she missed that told her she had it but it wasn’t obvious to her at the time. In there it listed both scholarships.
Hey! SMU was her #1 choice and a family friend who is involved w the school told her that paying the deposit wld give her a better chance of the best housing options (not necessarily true we later learned). She was already relying on external scholarships and didn’t know that Baylor would later offer her an additional academic scholarship. It was just a mistake on her part. Live and learn! She did not make the Hunt finals so she is prepared to walk away from her deposit unless SMU truly amazes her when we go visit the 2 schools later this month.
Does anyone know what date SMU released RD decisions last year? I was deferred from EA and I am so eager to find out.
March 11 last year.
Two years ago someone posted that everyone that was admitted after being deferred wrote a letter of continued interest and first semester grades were also considered. Good luck!
Anyone deferred in December hear anything yet? Still nothing over here.
I assumed those decisions came out with regular decisions. So no, nothing here yet.
