SMU Pre-Med

Hi I am currently a junior in high school and I’m strongly considering going pre-med in college. I’m very interested in SMU and was looking to get more insight on how helpful the pre-health advisors are in providing opportunities for internships, aiding in class selection, etc. I am also thinking about double majoring or major/minor with biology and history, because I know that medical schools like to see students with diverse majors/areas of study, and wasn’t sure if that would be a good option. Also, I know that SMU requires somewhere around 120 hours to graduate, and I feel like double majoring or major/minor may be the only way to achieve this. Thank you!

Hi AJ, I’m at SMU and 120 hours dont worry too much about that it is actually extremely standard at colleges to complete that many hours. If each class is 3 hours, 5 classes is 15 hours. Times 8 semesters that is your 120 hours. If you come in with any ap credit each test is worth 3 hours so think of that as time you get for more wiggle room.

Double majoring is always a great option, you will find a number of SMU students double major. and Biology and History sounds like a good combo if it makes you happy.

the history major has about 30 credit hours of classes. The biology major has roughly 60 hours of classes. Then the other 30 hours can be used to pick up any general curriculum requirements (many requirements may be met in your majors).

Pre-health advisors I have heard good things about, be sure to lean into the community to get connected with a number of the areas medical service providers (hospitals, outpatient offices, etc.). You can shadow there, or work doing undergraduate research, or both. It can all be very helpful in preparation for medical school.
