SMU Stereotypes

Hello CC!

I am a new resident of Texas. I decided to move here after 6.5 years in the USAF. I am currently enrolled in a Dallas CC but will be transferring next year. I can’t help but to notice that my 1st choice (SMU) has quite a few stereotypes. Things such as “money, race, and connections are the only things that matter.” After talking with a few other Dallas residents, I have heard the rich and preppy stereotype quite often. I was raised in a Lower-Middle class family, but I take care of myself since I am here alone. I may sound silly for asking, but what should I expect being a 27 y/o African American veteran?

Thank You!

Well the stereotype type exists because roughly for the longest time it was true. About 15 years ago the university began to change, the student quality has risen, as has the diversity of the student population. As a current student I have witnessed the transition. Now what was at one point a majority is now a minority. Do students as you have mentioned exist yes unfortunately. But you as I will likely never interact with them. They are not involved in any propensity and will only share the same degree as you. I would reach out to the veterans association they are very strong on campus and are great at transitioning non-traditional students such as yourself - with your experience. SMU is an excellent place to be and would recommend it to anyone. The stereotype is reducing and I hope you still consider getting a great education from this institution i love!
