I am a new resident of Texas. I decided to move here after 6.5 years in the USAF. I am currently enrolled in a Dallas CC but will be transferring next year. I can’t help but to notice that my 1st choice (SMU) has quite a few stereotypes. Things such as “money, race, and connections are the only things that matter.” After talking with a few other Dallas residents, I have heard the rich and preppy stereotype quite often. I was raised in a Lower-Middle class family, but I take care of myself since I am here alone. I may sound silly for asking, but what should I expect being a 27 y/o African American veteran?
You’ll be fine. Take a look at the college data set. You’ll be surprised how many get aid, scholarships, etc. It shows a lot of other interesting things such as student race, how many males vs females, etc.
The school has a lot to offer. I spoke with a current SMU student who readily admitted that these stereotypes exist because they are partially based in fact, but that it depends in which school within SMU that you are attending. Personally, I would love to see a veteran choose to attend SMU. Thank you for your service @tyrail!
