SMU vs University of Miami

I have always loved SMU. When people would ask me where I wanted to go to college that was always my answer. I got accepted with a merit scholarship. I love this school’s campus, reputation and I love the girl I am planning to room with. I am currently on a pre-business track. SMU has a great reputation for their business school. Ive also considered being a bio major. It is my strongest subject in school but SMU doesnt have a medical school. Should I base my decision off of this? My only fears are that I wont fit in at SMU because I am not extremely wealthy like many of the other students. I got wait listed for the university of Miami this fall. I don’t know any spanish so that is one of my worries of going there. But I love the beach and I love warm weather. Miami has a great business and medical school which makes me want to reconsider. Miami’s reputation is also great. I want to pick the right school from the start and not have to transfer. Help

I wouldn’t worry about SMU not having a medical school. What matters is that they have the necessary pre-med classes, and they seem to have them. Have you seen this: http://www.smu.edu/Dedman/StudentResources/UniversityAdvisingCenter/Pre-ProfessionalAdvising/PreMed

As for your fears of not fitting in, the only way you can see if that’s actually the case is to visit, and preferably stay overnight. Even if you don’t fit in, there are benefits to having wealthy classmates. I went to school in Texas and worked in Houston for a while, and I can say that the SMU network is very strong.

Since you have not been accepted to Miami, I am not certain what the dilemma is? Have you visited SMU? Can your family afford it, even with the scholarship? A school does not need to have a medical school affiliated with it in order to provide a good premed experience. You need a high GPA and a high MCAT score.

Im just curious if I get in off the waitlist should I consider Miami or stick with SMU. My family can afford SMU and I have visited. Im going to visit again this weekend
