Snow

How's the snow up there? Are you all managing with the plummeting temps?? Do exams get cancelled??

Woody: Where are you from? We are getting about 15-18" of snow here in Vermont--about the same in Montreal. It is no big deal-- just another winter snow storm. I doubt anything is effected in Montreal. It always amazes "flatlanders" how we get on with our lives and live with the snow. I doubt that local school here will even be canceled tomorrow--I cant imagine McGill changing anything. Ice is much worse than our powdery snow.

It is not even too cold-- it will get much colder in January, when it gets too cold to snow. Montreal will have hellacious winds in late winter.

Keep warm.

I'm from CT right on the Long island Sound. I guess I was a bit concerned because H was scheduled to fly to Toronto today. (He returned from the airport about an hour ago - all flights canceled!)
Spoke to S at McGill today and he is completely unfazed by the weather there. I thought it was just his usual laissez-faire attitude but perhaps not.

We used to ski in West Dover every weekend for years. I was always completely impressed with the snow removal operations up there. I have never seen such ENORMOUS snow plows!

hey woody, i'm from westchester, also on long island sound and when i spoke to my son earlier he was totally unfazed by the weather as well. my husband just called from the border, on his way up to pick him up, and he said the roads are pretty awful. obviously, he too is unfazed by weather!

i, for one, will take bitter cold over snow anyday!

As a north-chicagoan, I'm more used to hellish winds that snow, but at the moment, I'm rather unfazed by our current snow storm. I think it just snowed 1'+ , if mcgilldad is accurate, then it probably snowed over 1.5'. I HOPE they don't cancel finals and I want to get my exams over with.

2 years ago, on Friday December 16, Montreal got 41 cm of snow (about 16 inches), mostly all in the morning. It was exam time, so McGill allowed students to come to their exams up to two hours late, and all students would have the usual 3 hours to complete their exam, from the time they started. The last time McGill actually closed was during the ice storm of 98.

Blobof: You could have gone all winter without reminding me of the 1998 ice storm. I work as a city manager of a city in the Burlington, Vermont area-- we had no power for five days, 50% of trees were destroyed, roads impassable. Compared to that snow is nothing......

Funny story: After the ice storm, the whole power grid was down in southern Quebec. There is a great picture that shows downtown Montreal, at night, with Rue St. Catherine completely dark, except for one business which had an emergency generator and was still operating. With its lighted sign shining out in the dark city was.... wait for it.... Club Super Sexe. After that picture in the Gazette, they were shamed into donating the generator to a local hospital.

As I suspected 17" of snow and local schools are open, public works gets the job done again!!! Schools kids hate us.

ouch!!!!!!

^^great story, McGilldad!

yeah, I actually laughed at that.

p.s. they actually delayed our exam on friday. They couldn't have waited any later to notify us, though...

I just made a video, and the first 30 seconds depicts what winter in montreal is like. i'll post the link in a bit (not done yet). i actually have footage of the storm drmambo is referring to.

are you the same guy who did the rez videos last year? if so you rock man

Amazing story
