So, about the big 4

it seems like everybody (ie: most accounting majors that are still in undergrad) has this mindset that landing a position with the big 4 after graduating from college is the "ultimate goal in life."

further, i observed some of the postings here and realized that not everyone has a clear goal when it comes to the specific things they want to accomplish once they do make it to the big accounting firms. in fact, most would not even know what industry/sector interests them. some seem to think that the big 4 guarantees financial well-being and respect for life (the hardest part is to get on board, and you're set for life).

i think this trend could mislead a lot of college undergrads exploring job prospects upon finishing school. i want to know if this observation is accurate.

Big 4 should not be an ultimate goal in life, it is way too easy to reach. It’s just a a good starting point for your career.

The ultimate goal in any person’s life should be to be happy. Big 4 is a good launchpad, but heavens won’t fall if you don’t get in either. Other accounting firms generally have better working conditions, good salary prospects (they might not be as great but you won’t starve) and can provide interesting work as well. It’s up to the individual to decide what makes them happiest and it’s up to them to pursue that to the fullest IMO.
