i took the bio m test in may and basically failed with a 580.
i used the barrons book to study and i guess that wasn't enough..
any advice on how i should study and what i should use to study from?

also, i'm not very strong with math but im not terrible.
im considering maybe taking math II..
would i have to be a stellar math student to get a 700+ for the math II test?

I can’t say anything about biology; I haven’t taken the course since 9th grade and haven’t taken the subject test, either.

As for math, I think the most important factor should be how many years of math courses you have taken. If you have taken three, including Alg. II and possibly some precal, take Math I. If you have taken four, including Alg. II and a considerable amount of precal, take Math II if you feel that you have grasped precal topics well (i.e., if you did well in the class). Other than that, just buy a review book, consult your textbook for review, and practice, practice, practice with those practice tests.

What bio classes have you taken and how long has it been since those classes? I was in AP Bio, so I just studying for the AP worked out perfectly, and I found Cliffnotes to be perfect. It’s a bit more detailed that what the SAT2 requires at times, but maybe that’s what you need.

And Math 2 is basically all pre-cal, so I second wittywonka.

I took Biology M last year and got a 790. I used the Princeton Review: I took it everywhere with me, and if I was sitting in the bus or car (not driving, of course!) I would read it, or if I was just lounging around at home. Constantly reading the information covered drills it into your head. I also read a little bit of Cliffnotes, my textbook, some internet resources, SparkNotes, and SparkNotes flashcards. I like to use as many resources as possible when studying, because some books cover material that others don’t and some are much easier to understand than others. My methodology of studying takes a LOT of time, effort, and determination, but if you’re an overachiever like me then you’ll do fine. I’ve gotten four other stellar standardized test scores by reading everything in every book.

I strongly suggest using the PR Sat bio book. My method of studying is sort of like darshelrosopelli’s in that i studied that book from cover to cover and took it with me everywhere. The book has all the information that you need to score high (i got a 790 on the bio this way) and it is condensed so that you are not studying things that are not on the test and will just make you lose focus. My way of studying is reading a section and taking notes. It’s really time consuming but it works.

space, while i thought PR was good, I didn’t feel like a lot of the stuff on the june sat II was on it. like about plants in bogs needing nitrogen or something? haha maybe i just didnt study that well

thanks for the feedback guys!
im planning to take the bio and possibly math in october.
hopefully things will turn out better than last time.
does anybody know if oct subject tests have good curves?

I would suggest Barrons and Kaplan for Bio; I thought PR lacked a lot of relevent information, so that’s why. I studied for it by taking a practice test a week and reading the prep books cover to cover several times, so if that’s how you want to go about studying, it might work for you.

thanks for all your input guys. i REALLY want to raise my bio score!
i blanked out when i opened the test booklet in may, and i felt like barrons didnt prepare me for any of the stuff! should i still read over barrons anyway?

really? barrons didnt prepare you…
that sorta makes me worry because ive just been studying from barrons
and i feel like i havent been able to grasp everything yet…
im taking it in oct. too

I took bio in 9th grade and got a 780. I used Barrons (both the old gray one and the new deborah goldberg one) to study. I used it together with princeton. I thought kaplan was terrible for bio e-m. One thing that helped was that whenever i was confused with a topic, i borrowed a friend’s AP Bio Campbell book (fantastic book) and used it as a reference.
