And I asked my counselor and she was no help - her only response was, take it when you feel comfortable.

OK, Im a sophomore now, and I am not sure when to take stuff. This is what I was thinking.

June 2006: SAT II for Math IC and Math IIC
October 2006: PSAT/NMSQT
April 2007: SAT I
May 2007: AP testing for AP Stats, AP Calc AB, APUSH, AP Eng Lit and AP Art Studio
June 2007: SAT II for Literature and US History

Does this look okay? I am really concerned about april-may of next year though - that is EIGHT tests in a short span of 3 months. Can I do it?

Also, is taking both the math tests merely at the end of sophomore year a wise idea? I want the information to still be fresh in my head after i complete Pre-Calc this year. AAAH! I need HELP!

What math are you taking now.... I say do Math iic only once you finish pre-cal. Good setup and remember that SAT's don't mean everything. A 2100+ is good enough for any school, and maybe even a 2000+.

BTW, SAT II's are easier. I never studied for any and I took 3 in 1 day w/o prep. 780, 750, 750 and I took chem AP two years prior to the SAT II.

Yea, in june I will be almost finished with pre-calc. however, im thinking that I may want to have a little bit of calculus before i take the math II so i think i might actually take the Math 2C in november or december. does this still sound okay?

My son took SATII Math II in the fall after he started AP Calc AB, which was good for him because they were reviewing pre-calc in both calc & AP Physics C, so he did great on the Math II exam without studying. You'd probably do great on your Math II exam this June, after you've just finished pre-calc too. Any science you're taking that you may wish to take a SATII exam on at the same time this June?
Not sure why you'd take the Math I--much tougher curve--lots of the kids taking more advanced math don't do very well on it & most schools want the Math II anyway, especially if you are interested in studying math and/or science.
I'd suggest taking the SATII exams the May you're taking the AP exams, up to 3 on the same day (which is the max anyway). Would consider adding a SATII in science, if you like and/or are interested in studying science in college.
Also, our kids' school recommends all kids take the ACT in spring of their junior year as well. Some do great on it & prefer to use those scores on their aps. In the fall, seniors tend to retake tests they want to improve on & send in their college aps.

You really think I should just avoid Math I altogether? I was going to use it as a safety in case Math II went really badly.

Also, I strongly despise science and will only be taking a science AP in senior year (which will be too late to take a subject II test and have it count). I plan on being an international relations major so science doesn't pertain to anything i want to do. Will not having a science subject test really hurt me?

As long as you have two (or three, depending on the college) tests from two different subject areas, you're fine (example: history and language). If international relations does not concern science, then I think it's okay to not have a science subject test.

I'd suggest you take the SATII MathII in May of Junior year & then you could retake it in fall of senior year if you need to. Since you're already taking precalc, you probably won't do too well in MathI (my son didn't), but do great in MathII (son got 800 in that). You could always look over the books for the SATIIs--they are available free at many libraries & at the bookstores. It can give you an idea of what is on the tests so you can decide whether you really want MathI (most schools prefer MathII anyway, is our understanding).

You don't really need science SATII -- just thought you might like it, since many math folks like science as well. Definitely good to take SAT II US History & good idea to take at least one other SATII--english lit should be fine. If you're happy with the scores you got in junior year, you won't need to take any more tests in your senior year. My son just took SATII MathII in fall of senior year because he took MathI & many of his schools (for engineering) wanted SATII MathII (which he did better in anyway). Some kids who weren't happy with their scores took more testing in fall of senior year. At our school, many kids take the SATII in science after complete the course--bio in 9th grade, chem in 10th & physics in 11th & most do pretty well, even tho they're not taking the AP or even honors sections.

Are there any other GCs at your school? Ours is pretty helpful, tho really busy, since he's the only college GC for the entire HS of about 1000 kids. There are four grade-level counselors too (handles 240 kids each & stays with them for 4 years).

I would take the SAT I in January of your junior year. You may be done with it at that point especially if you are going to prepare for the PSAT. If you do need to take it again you can in April.

Also the Math 2C would be much better to take than the 1C. The curve is more generous and it "looks better" to colleges.

If you're thinking about ED or EA to selective schools, I'd take the SAT I earlier than April. I ran into problems taking the SAT I in June. By the time my scores got back and I knew I wanted/needed to raise them, it was too late to prepare and sign up for a retake that spring. I had to take the test in October and then wait several more weeks for the results to come in.

That made it very difficult to decide on a ED/EA school in enough time, since I wasn't sure what would be realistic. Once I got back the revised scores and saw these were definitely higher, I had to revise my overall college list in a short space of time. (HMy school also requires that requests for recs and transcripts be made by December 1 for colleges with a Jan. 1 deadline.)

Whoops! There's a typo in my post above. I meant to say I got into trouble taking the SAT I in April. Either way--April or June--that's too late. I'd take it earlier.

Thats not that many tests in a short time. It's doable. My main concern is, what is your major? I see 1 (or 2) math, 1 english, and 1 social studies. Make sure you aren't applying for something like Biochemistry and not take any science SATiis.

My major would be either international relations or political science, so nothing really pertaining to science. Ok, so I think I won't take the SAT Math I this spring anymore. I will wait for later this year (octoberish) and do the Math II which gives me plenty of summer prep. Then I guess I will do the SAT I in january so I can do a retake later if my scores arent where i want them to be. Everything else will stay the same then.

Why not take SATII MathII at the end of this year (May or June)? You're covering pre-calc, which is what they have on the test anyway? Look over a book at the library or bookstore & you'll see it is basically what you're already doing in class, but of course, it's up to you. If my son were to do it again, I think he'd take MathII at the end of pre-calc, then he wouldn't have had to take it in the fall instead. He just didn't realize schools were much more interested in MathII than MathI.
