So Far From Home

thanks for all the suggestions. 3boys - we actually have an REI that I can check out. And the others you and Marite suggested all have websites. I'm headed to them right now....

See, this is the kind of stuff I mean. My S wore short and T-shirts to class up until three weeks ago. This is going to be an interesting change. :D

My son is wearing shorts and a tee-shirt even as we speak. Boston will be a shock.... But he only has to get to the nearest tunnel faster than his blood freezes. He actually owns a perfectly serviceable winter coat that he inherited from his Chicago cousin, but he doesn't like it because it's a hand-me-down, plus he didn't pick it out. On the rare days it's cold here, people simply wear multiple layers of all the Texas clothes they own. Makes for some strange outfits. Personally, my choice was always to just skip class and stay home under the covers those days.

I'm late to this party, but here's some more winter coat info, given to me last week.

It's at the end of the thread.
DD's going from Mobile to Hanover, so another big change here. We went North Face shopping today. Right now we only plan to get a jacket, mainly because she is so tiny (4'9"), she's worried about finding something that fits. There are 2 stores here that carry NF, and the clerk said they can't keep the 3 in 1 jackets in stock (Who on earth needs one here?) - but they can special order and will send it back until we get the right fit. Otherwise, I think she's going to buy boots, etc, after she gets there. My Mom and I are already planning a trip next Oct to look at fall color and do her winter shopping ;). That will also substitute for Thanksgiving.

Texas, picked mine up from the airport - wearing a short-sleeved t-shirt. He did have a jacket on, but took it off as soon as we got outside. It was 49 and he said it felt balmy. He also said he wore the jacket because it wouldn't fit in his carry-on. He doesn't even own any long-sleeved shirts, although I will remedy that while he's home. Maybe their southern blood keeps them warm.

I'm VERY glad to have him home.

So much for good intentions -- S phoned this morning between finals to say it was nine degrees out and he had unwrapped the gloves I sent. They are both for the left hand! Anyone out there with two rights?:)

Sac:
...another case of a leftist family unveiled, I see...

Did anyone else do this? He got home Saturday night. Sunday morning, knowing he was still sleeping, I opened the door and peeked in just to make sure he was really home. So embarrassing!

Re the winter jacket in Boston, S is going to wait until November or December--whenever he decides he can't stand the cold anymore-- and buy his own there.

Sac, Whatever he says about how cold it is here, it is even colder than you're imagining. It was SO windy this morning, and eight degrees when i left the house (it's ll and going down right now), and all I could think about was the way the wind whips down those NYC canyons. Brrr.

Right now, it's 9 degrees out. Last night, some neighborhood moms and I went out to do our annual caroling tour but only made it to several houses before heading back to shelter (and food and libation) in sub-zero wind chill conditions. It's really the wind chill conditions in Boston that can get to you.

Oh crap. I will not tell S it's 9 degrees in Boston. Today the clouds finally lifted and I think it might hit 60. We are going shopping for sneakers this morning.

Right now it's -1 in Hanover, Daughter feels like there is a hgeatwave in NYC today because it is 28 degrees. She has not worn her "whole" coat (shell & fleece) because she is preparing for the Hanover cold and doesn't want to throw on too much at one time. She did say that that she has to buy some extra thermals while she is home and heard that the silk thermals really keep you warm

Wow, and here I thought NYC was freezing!! It was the coldest day ever yesterday. A little better today.

Minus four in Northampton. But next week, we're in Madurai! It's 92 today!

It is freeeeezing in NYC. I literally experienced minor frost bite yesterday when I had to clean the snow off the car. I suppose that is winter in the northeast, I must get used to it at some point.

Sybbie:

I like silk thermals myself. I think -1 qualifies for the 3-in-1 combo! You can always add another layer underneath.

Hmm...I think I need those just for daily use. I am always freezing!

My daughter got herself a 3-in-one jacket made by Columbia last year. She said it has worked out perfectly. She use the shell in the spring for a rainjacket and wore all the layers for skiing and going to classes on campus. We got it at a great price at a local department store. It's 27 degrees right now in our neck of the woods, which is 10 degrees warmer then yesterday at this time!

It was 88 and rainy here today. In 2 hours my son will get on the first of 3 planes to get home. He gets here in 31 hours. It will still be 88 and rainy when he arrives!
