As you can tell from the title, I'm a freshman in high school. So far everything is not going as planned. Last year, I was very positive about starting high school, excited, even. I would be all "First year in high school, YEAH! Bring it on". I think I jinxed it. My grades are dropping; extracurriculars activities have a hard time handling; in a losing streak in tennis matches.

I'm getting A's, B's, and one C. Those grades are not expected of me. Horrible.

My schedule:
Honors Physical Science
Spanish 1
Honors Geometry
Geography (honor class not available; class only for 1 semester)
Honors English 1
Advanced Girl's Tennis

MESA( Math, Engineering, Science Achievement )
Academic Decathlon
Choir Club
Tennis practice after school from (3 to 5. Up to 7 when we have a game)
I know my schedule isn't that impressive compared to other CC users. AP classes are not available until sophomore year.

I'm having a hard time managing everything all at the same time. I'm not used to being this busy in school. I'm doing my best by doing weekly/daily planners, but I get sidetracked on the way.

Get off this website. Now. And don’t come back until the end of sophomore year, or junior year. I’m happy I didn’t discover CC until last year, so I didn’t compare my courses/SAT scores with everyone on here for the first couple years of high school. I don’t know if my self esteem could have handled it…

I’m guessing though, that your middle school was much easier than high school. That will take some adjusting, but a bunch of people go through the same thing and end up fine. If there’s a specific subject you’re having difficulties with, speak with the teacher to figure out what you’re doing wrong, and how you can improve your grades. Don’t stress yourself out over your C/B’s. Almost everyone has messed up grades at the beginning of the semester.

Extracurriculars can get extremely stressful, but sometimes coaches understand. My team coach will allow us to skip a practice if we have too much work to do. It sounds like you’ve taken on a bit too much to do for your freshmen year right now, so why not drop an E.C? If choir takes up too much time, no college will look at you poorly if you decide to drop it (or another one of your EC’s). You shouldn’t even be worrying about college apps right now- just enjoy going into high school.

It sounds as if I was the complete opposite of you freshmen year. Although I was in honors classes, my middle school prepared me- actually, I was over-prepared. I didn’t join EC’s until a couple months in, and tried to find my footing at a new school where I did not know anybody. Looking back, I do wish I started EC’s at the beginning of the year like you, but if everything is stressing you out right now, don’t stick with it unless you are really passionate about it.

I can only say this, you’ve identified your personal problem. Each person on here has a specific way that they motivate, stay organized, and deal with stress. We can recommend only so much, but it’s up to you, the person with the problem, to fix it.
You’ve come upon one of the many stumbling blocks of life, this one seems to separate those should I say that are just going through high school motions and having a good time, and those who think, I want to shake the world. Now you’ve done better than most, you’ve identified the problem, now it’s up to you to fix it.
