So, Fellow AP German-ites...

Yeah, I realized I posted this in another forum, but I think I posted it in the wrong one or something. Wow. Newbie after 370+ posts.

Erm. How are you preparing for the AP/SAT test? There aren't many books on it (there usually are for Spanish and French, though). Before you stare at me with this "What-sort-of-moron-are-you" look, my teacher is horrible and I think he's getting fired after this year. We know nothing about the format and what to do to prepare.

So aahhh, can you help a fellow AP German-ite out?

German is difficult, considering there is only one published guide to the test, and it is outdated. I strongly suggest you consider private tutoring for this test.
As far as self-prep goes, consider the break-down of the test:
20% Listening
25% Reading
30% Writing
25% Speaking

There are now a number of German radio stations online, so I would suggest starting there as a great way of prepping for the listening section. If you'd like, you can email me and I will send you specific suggestions as to which stations. Try and find times when Hoerspiele are on. You should also be watching your share of German films, with subtitles turned off. I would also suggest coming up with a list of questions about the plays, and answering them sometimes in writing, sometimes orally.

For the reading section, the easiest place to start is with German newspapers, almost all of which can be found online at this point.

You should treat the writing section like any other standardized test essay, and prepare as much as possible what you are going to write about ahead of time.

The speaking section is perhaps the most difficult to self-prep. Are the other AP German students in your class willing to work on this with you together? Please let me know if you have any questions, and good luck!

Wow, thanks!

Sadly, there are only 3 people in AP German now. There used to be 10 but 4 dropped it and 2 flunked out. One barely shows up any more. The rest of us are more than willing to work on the speaking part because we've gotten pretty desperate at this point.

I've heard about the test prep book that it's completely irrelevant to the exam. It doesn't even mention the exam, and even goes to tell the reader how to write an English essay. Something like that, I think it disappointed everyone I knew connected to the AP class, teachers included.

Thanks for the suggestions. :) I'm guessing this isn't a very popular test?
