why do they say cornell is suicidal?
is it really THAT hard?
what makes it 'suicidal' and difficult? or is just a myth?...
how difficult is the school really?

See that sticky at the top of this forum? That would be a good post to read.

It’s a myth…a terrible one, overemphasized for dramatic purposes…with all the gorges and stuff lol plus the suicide rate is well below the national average! Just disregard things like this, cuz ppl will always make stuff up

ok
well are classes hard?
whats the situation with the workload?...

classes are notoriously hard at cornell in some majors, biological sciences, for example. however, it is college , and i feel like a lot of the difficulty comes from the competition for grades rather than the material itself. people work hard not because they need to to have aptitude in the class, but because there is little room for error if you want an A.

For this reason, at least i feel, classes are "hard." but it wont be much different at cornell than most other elite schools. I went to northwestern this year, and while i felt like i understood the material, i had to study all the time to get good grades, because only a certain amount of people are given A's. for this reason i found my workload to be extreme. U of Chicago is even worse because a lot more purely "work hard" people go there it seems... here people have their fun :). the u of chicago students are always studying and A's are excessively difficult to attain. Everyone studies their asses off and because of this the classes are hard to perform well in from a grade standpoint, NOT from a material standpoint.

That said, it depends on what your goals are. I feel like if you want to be a B,B+ student, then you won't find classes that hard, but if you want a 3.5-3.6+ gpa... then you will find your workload to be tough.

you transferred from cornell to northwestern?
whys that?

How much do you study per day on average?

"Cornell University is one peer institution that does maintain moderately complete records of their student deaths in response to a common perception that they have a high suicide rate. Cornell had eight students take their own lives in the past ten years. With about 19,000 students on campus per year, Cornell has a suicide rate of about 4.3 per 100,000 student years for that time period, far below both MIT and national rates."

For me, there are times when I have to study a lot and times when I do almost nothing at all. Typically, the few weeks after prelims I tend to slow down. And the weeks when I have papers or prelims, I have to work extraordinarily hard. Last week was particularly difficult because I had to do the research for a 15-page term paper (combing through mountains of colonial documents) and write the actual paper in the span of 4 days. We were given a month to write the paper but I simply didn't get to it for whatever reason. I ended up pulling an all-nighter and turning the paper in at 3:45 PM (it was due at 4:00PM).

dood... it's hard. When I say hard, I mean it.

I also have periods where I have to work very hard and periods where I don't work much at all. (This weekend, for instance, is like the calm before the storm; I'm taking tomorrow and Monday off, then Tuesday through the following Wednesday I'll be living in hell workload-wise for finals). Average per day during the semester? 3 hours, I'd guess. For me, that's usually 9pm-12 or 10pm-1.

what the... notoriously hard for their biological sciences?! I'm scared. how much truth is in that statement?

I've never heard of Cornell's bio major being known as notoriously hard.

what about engineering? chemical/electrical? i know engineering is hard anywhere...but what is the average gpa/highest gpa?

sexy123, im transfering from northwestern to cornell because of financial issues. but what im saying is that i dont believe cornell will be much harder than it is here, cuz here you have trimesters that last ten weeks long, in which you typically have two big exams per class and a final at the end. The face is ridiculously fast and you are studying for exams all the time. but i got through it alright and had a great time.

in the end you will realize that you end up managing your work just fine and often it is the stress and pressure that actually gets you through it. You'll be fine, it's not gonna be much harder at cornell than it is at most other great schools.

Bio sciences is not that hard per se. It's just made stressful because of pre-med competition. But in terms of workload, no, it's pretty normal.
The bottom line is that you're going to work hard here no matter what you do and it's really kind of pointless to worry about it.

what about engineering? deadly?

Literally. Engineering shanks people. Watch ur back
