Well I was in the dorms for 8 days before classes started, and I built up a streak of 7 days straight of partying (at night), culminating with a day-long party and the Wisconsin-UNLV game. Yeah, it was awesome. Time for classes though.

Ahh, it was a rollercoaster. I was crazy homesick. Cried a couple times. Activities were cancElled because of the hurricane. After that I went to the theme park and had a sleepover. Then I started pledging a sorority and attended my first frat party that got busted by the cops. Just crazy. I have quite the workload from classes. I’m processing everything now. But overall not too bad and I think I made the right choice in transferring and am now getting the hang of things. I’ve already done alot in one week than what I did in one year at my old school. So let the good times roll!

I haven’t felt homesick once! I started my third day of classes today after 3-4 days of orientation. I ALREADY missed my first class and it was only the second day!! I slept through my 8AM chemistry class … Ha, whoops -_- I think I’m transitioning okay, but the workload hasn’t really hit me yet. I’ve been to two game events, made some friends, and attended most of the social campus events. Things are going good so far and I LOVE it here, but I just hope I could make some more friends and branch out. But it’s only been the third day of classes, so I still have plenty of time.

We’re actually two weeks in here.

My schedule goes like this:
Monday/Wednesday: 10-12 Undergrad research/Thesis
12:55-4:50 Methods of Instrumental Analysis
6-9 Working as a tutor

Tuesday/Thursday:
8-9:15 Polymer Physics
9:30- 10:45 Energy and humanity
12-5 Undergrad research/Thesis
6-7:45 Linear Algebra

I don’t have classes on Fridays, but I tutor for most of the day on Fridays as well as on Sundays. I’m getting exhausted already but I’m enjoying all of my classes so far and I’m excited to be starting my last year as an undergrad.

Awful and Embarrassing

I attend a university in Texas and I transferred from a different college out of state. So right off the bat I am an “older” student and classmates have noticed this.

On the first day of my PR class, I arrived on time. But I wasn’t expecting the teacher to ask us to introduce ourselves. The first mistake was that someone volunteered, and it should have been me because if I had gone first, I would’ve felt less nervous about it.

I just waited until it was my turn, and this made me even more nervous. When I finally spoke, I rambled a bit about why I was taking the class and I didn’t answer some of his questions correctly. One of the students turned her head. The teacher also had a difficult time pronouncing my name, which is of East European origin.

My class size is small and I feel that I have royally screwed my reputation because I wasn’t prepared to talk. Worse of all, we have to work on a group project mid-semester and I fear that my classmates will be skeptical towards me.

Since then I’ve sat in the back of the class and I try not to talk much.

^Wow, really? I’m sure no one cares at all. I wish I had a dollar for every time I awkwardly muddled through an introduction in class, and no one cares. You didn’t “screw your reputation,” that’s so dumb. Your classmates will be fine working with you as long as you do the work.

Alright it’s been a week:

Most of my classes are pretty good. Macroeconomics should be very interesting and while I think the teacher is a Keynesian, perhaps he can convince me to join the dark side. My physics professor is very enthusiastic and while it’ll be challenging I’m sure I’ll enjoy it (it’s about the global energy issue and is very discussion and group oriented). My management elective will also be interesting, since it’s about evidence-based management and the teacher really knows his stuff. Criminal law is just plain awesome, the professor kicks ass and it may make me want to major in criminology & criminal justice.

The only bad one so far has been managerial accounting. I took about 15 lines of notes today in an hour and 15 minute class. The first 20 or so were spent talking about how to get involved in the business school and about some guy who was an Eagle Scout at age 14 that got a $55K/year job offer from PwC this summer despite having one more year of school left. Ugh, that’s gonna be the one really bad course. I knew the teacher was supposed to be bad and sadly he’s the only one who teaches it.

Helium, try not to be so self-conscious.

A university campus has students of all ages…no one is “noticing” that you are older because you are a transfer student.
As far as your self-introduction, I can assure you no one thought much about it. And the fact that the professor may have mangled your name should not embarrass you…or the professor. It happens. Correct the professor’s pronunciation and go on from there.
