do you get a point off every question wrong, or what? is it scored like the SAT?

There is a curve. So, no it does not work like that.

is there any real way to find out what the curve for recent tests has been? last time I received scores it just showed sub-scores which can't calculate your score out of 36 for each section alone.. anyone got a credible average chart or something? I know there's one in a pdf on ACT's site, but I don't know how accurate it is.

you get points for right answers, no points for wrong or blank

If you get the ACT prep book, the practice tests have curves. I think you can also find official practice tests online which have curves.

Yeah, practice tests will give you a good idea of the curves, but they vary from test to test.
