so how much debt is too much debt?

i see alllll these threads asking "is ____k too much debt?" so i figured we can make a thread that has an answer for most people:

what is a practical amount that students should borrow for their undergraduate degree?

Depends on the student-- whether he has family resources that will likely help repay the debt, and his intended field.

I told my daughter I’m comfortable with her taking out around 20K in undergrad debt (combined subsidized and unsubsidized). She’ll be going to a LAC, undecided where she’ll land after that.

I read somewhere the average debt for an undergraduate was ~22k. blehh

It probably depends on your major too. For example, an English or music major could handle far less debt than an engineering major because of the job opportunities.

I’m transferring out of private school just to avoid the debt til graduate school.
