So how's the weather in the south?

I'm from CA. What's the weather like at Duke in that NC area?

Humid as a mother.

^^^so true...

Meh, it's only humid in the summer months. It's also hot as hell during that time. Winter is pretty mild. It hasn't snowed yet. In fact, it's in the 70s in Durham right now.

I remember it was mid to high 70s during finals week. I worked up a sweat just going outside in pants.

So I shouldn't bring coats and parkas and such??

I'm also looking at Northwestern and people have said that I should bring 'Artic Expedition' clothes...

Wow...how different the weather..

No, you should still bring a coat. I'm from NY and I'm fine with my North Face and a scarf on the coldest days...but my roommate is from LA and she always complains about how it's "freezing." I guess it's all relative.

No, you definitely need coats and parkas. It does get really cold. It's just that the weather changes randomly. We had a really freaking cold week last week, in the 20s and 30s, but the week before that it was 70s and it hit 70s this week too. It's in the 50s right now.

it gets cold in jan/feb -- and if you're spending any nights in kville (whether it's sleeping or boozing during personal checks), you'll regret not having a parka. i'm from new york, and never brought my down coat down first semester, but always have it (and wear it a handful of times) second semester. while there's always been some random hot days in december around finals and during sorority rush in january, it's generally the exception rather than the norm.

the killer part of durham's weather (at least for me, native NYer) are the huge temperature swings. sometimes there can be a 30 degree difference in one day. and in january, there can be a lot of ice. in the summer it gets humid. north carolina is very temperate -- you'll have all four seasons.

I LOVE DUKE WEATHER

yeah it was 80 degrees before i left

e/c on move-in day it was like 108? and with no a/c that's a bad situatin.

fyi~if you are tenting in kville you will want to have a GOOD sleeping bag!! S1 said that there were people who expected that the sleeping bag they used when they were kids (for sleepovers) would suffice, but it definitely gets really cold at night during basketball season! We got him a zero degree sleeping bag the Christmas before his freshman year tenting experience and he said it was terrific!
