So, I have to admit that part of me has abandoned CC

…Now that it’s mid-February, I’ve sorta had this epiphane. I’ve abandoned CC, basically. I’m in the stage that I’m sure most ppl are at this point. The stage where you realize chance threads are really kinda pointless, and that checking in this late in the process won’t really affect your admissions decision. I don’t really like this revelation, but it’s somewhat true. CC feels more like a place for admissions moral support. So, I’ve returned.
Is it me, or does the Banard page feel a bit dead to you?

Here’s to re-igniting the discussion!

So, I thought we could all use this as a place where we could post excerpts of our essays, and just mainly info. Where are you from? Where are you applying? What are your plans this summer? What advice do you have, if your a Barnard mom or a graduate, about Barnard? How are you spending your last few months in high school doing?
Or whatever you choose.

I thought this was desperately needed! :D

(Obviously, make sure you disclose any personal information [addresses, phone #'s])

It does feel a bit dead! I think we should get to talking more :]

I guess more about me… I’m from New Jersey, born and raised, an ex-Catholic school girl, a regular teenager dying to get out of high school. I’m currently drinking Mango bubble tea while watching the opening ceremony of the Olympics!

The last few months of high school are dragging out so much! As much as I’ll miss my friends, I really would love the new adventure, you know? I’m currently working on a coffeehouse for my school’s literary magazine and putting together a spring issue, and we’re also getting ready for a Classics state convention.

This summer I’m going to keep working my job–I tutor at a Kumon. The craziness. I’m going to be dancing during the daytime, hopefully interning at a theatre around here to teach dance and such. I’ll probably take a writing course in the City, and do a lot of driving and hanging out with my friends before heading off to college. And I want to readreadread all the books I always wanted to read. My current obsession is Paulo Coelho–currently reading The Valkyries.

I’m going to be in NYC tomorrow! I’m going to the MoMA and hopefully checking out that Tim Burton exhibit, finally.

Just some random things I wanted to say :]

What has everyone else been up to as of late?

I’m from northern Virginia, by way of SoCal, and I’m pretty excited to get out of high school too. I’ve been there since 8th grade, and have been in the building since 6th grade. But I haven’t been to school in over a week, so that’s pretty nice… for now. Haha we’ll probably still be making up school in July…

I was going to go to regionals for scholastic bowl (yes, I am THAT cool) today, but they were called off due to weather I guess? But I would have had to go down to Appomattox, which is 4-5 hrs away. Gross. So I’m just chilling at home, I’ll probably edit the Peter Pan script for the children’s production I’m directing and work on memorizing music for my church play. Maybe see a movie and/or head over to the Kennedy Center. Millennium Stage is doing this great program this week where they’re featuring up-and-coming musical theatre composers, which is pretty sweet and right up my alley. :)

This summer, I’m hoping to get an awesome theatre internship in the city. I have a couple in mind, but we’ll see who wants me! So much like college admissions in the respect, I guess.

I love the city, but my parents have banned me from going up for a while. I did kinda spend 9 days there in January, so it’s understandable, but it makes me quite sad. I have a terrible addiction to Broadway. I’ll be quite sad not to see this cast of Hair again before they leave. And I really want to go see Billy Elliot again… it was SO amazing.

I promise, Broadway/musical theatre’s not all I talk about, it’s just what I’m really passionate about! I read over on the Columbia board that Barnard & Columbia recently hired someone from UMich, which is pretty awesome. :)

Hi! I’m from a suburb just southeast of the Twin Cities, MN, originally from Canada, and 100% Polish.

I’m eagerly awaiting tonight’s men’s skating finals @ the Olympics, drinking some lemonade, and waiting for a phone call from the literary agent for whom I intern.

I’m a writer - writing is the one thing I’m passionate about and the one thing I’ve pursued avidly my entire life. I’ve completed eight novels (started in '03) and am currently rewriting the eighth with hopes to secure a literary agent of my own. A few agents have the full manuscript already. I hope to have a book deal by September . . . knocks on wood

Otherwise, I do lots - write for the newspaper, intern, participate on the state literary council, mentor with a professional novelist, and more.

I loved Barnard, and I hope I get in. I was deferred in the early round. sigh

Nice ‘meeting’ you all! Love all of your stories. If I lived in NYC, I would attend Broadway show after Broadway show.

I used to live in MN! I lived in a suburb not too far from St. Cloud. Then, moved to Texas. Culture shock…Anyways, I was born in Cambridge. I get made fun a lot of because of the way I say “bag”. Ahh! I can’t shed the Minnesotan accent! haha

Honestly, I don’t watch the Olympics, but I DO love theatre. I’m probably not as heavily into it as all of you, but I love watching shows. The last one I saw was “Cyrano de Bergerac” and it was amazing!

Arg! I’m such a stereotype! I write as well, but I’m not publishd or anything…and I’m told that I’m pretty good, but I don’t have the patience, dedication and grammar skills to do anything useful with my writing.

I live in Boondock-y Texas, and I go to a fairly decent school. It’s new, and our first graduating class ever graduated in '09. I believe we sent one to Hahvahd (haha), one to Brown (my sis), and one to Olin College, one to WashU and another to Case Western. A whole bunch of Rice Univ people too. So, I go to a pretty decent public school.

Things I love about Bahnahd (hahahaha)
…

CAMPUS
2.SMALL CLASSES
3.NYC
4.FACULTY
5.COLUMBIA

Things I’m nervous about:
…

Interaction between private school kids and public schoolers

CU, in general. CU ■■■ is hater territory.

NYC = barely any campus community :(

Ranking (I know it’s not REALLY important, but it kinda is)

Course-work.

NYC Rats
7.Roaches

Dorms, in general. I heard there nice enough, but I’d have to see that for myself.

My major. How unstable is Art history??? I want to go into magazine work (fashion mags) but I’m completely confused with how to do so.

SkittleRose, Wej, Wisdomsomehow- I’m so excited to graduate!!!

this took me forever to respond to, but inconspicuous, Teen Vogue published a book a little while ago that all of these incredibly helpful tips about how to get your foot in the door in a bunch of different branches of the fashion industry, including magazines. It’s called the Teen Vogue Handbook, and you can find it at most major bookstores, I think. I like Teen Vogue, they’re the only classy teen fashion mag left. I miss Elle Girl. :(

I have family in the cities, one of my best friends lives in Edina, and I spend part of every summer up near Brainerd. Small world, huh?

Did any of you see Spring Awakening?

Yesterday I was looking at my planner… it’s less than three weeks until decision time AHHHH

skittlerose, you have no idea. I lovelovelove Spring Awakening. I saw it twice on Broadway and… we’ll just go with many more times on tour. It’s ridiculous. But yeah. Hunter Parrish is my future husband. He just doesn’t know it yet. And I’m so excited for Jonathan Groff to be on Glee, though I didn’t see the show till long after he left. I’ve heard good things about Kyle Riabko in Hair, as well. I love Hair so much, it’s such an amazing show. The cast that just left was marvelous.

Spring Awakening is my favorite Broadway musical!!! Did you read the original play? Absolutely amazing as well. I saw it twice on Broadway and tried to go see it on tour but it entailed drivine 4 hours away :[[[[[[ ahh I was SO upset when it left Broadway. How could they end such an incredible show?! I need to see the current tour! Jake Epstein?!?! I am unfortunately a Degrassi junkie as well hahaha.

Yeah, I read the original play. I like Sater’s book better than Wedekind’s honestly…Wedekind’s just a bit too out there for me. But I wrote a huuuuuuge essay on a comparison between Sater’s book and Romeo and Juliet for my IB diploma.

I saw the first leg of the tour many times, and I saw the second leg this past January and I was let down. The Broadway show was definitely stronger. Jake Epstein is a total sweetie, but he was better in the role in July than he was the last time I saw it. Hunter Parrish is still my favorite of the three I’ve seen (him, Kyle, and Jake).

Haha I actually ended up seeing it in Chicago, because I happened to be visiting Northwestern while it was there. It was a great show, an understudy for Moritz was on and he was just PHENOMENAL.

That’s really intense! I will definitely pick up Sater’s book when I have the chance.

My friend’s girl scout troupe was lucky enough to have an hour meet and greet with the whole cast! I get so jealous looking at their pictures haha. Last night I was watching Jake Epstein’s TotallyTrucked profile on YouTube–he’s so cute and down to earth!

How’s the weather for everyone right now? I live in Jersey and not too long ago we had a really awful blizzard hit us, and then it was really nice for a week or so, and now it’s raining so hard that the power is out in the neighboring towns and at my school. I wish the weather would be stable for once!!! But it’s supposed to be really nice next week–low 60s.

yeah, I had one of those too. It was one of my prizes for being the top promoter of the show in the DC area. :)

we have pretty much the exact same weather, haha. Lots of snow in early February (winter break 2.0 ftw!), then last week was really nice, except it started raining yesterday and it’s been yucky since. :P

what is up with you, global warming? I do not approve.

It’s Minnesota “summer” weather here in Texas. Slightly warm, and a bit breezy. Perfect.
Wisdom- THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH FOR TELLING ME ABOUT THIS BOOK! I just got that book in the mail, “The teen Vogue Handbook” and I love it! It’s useful information. Although, I have to admit, I already know about CondeNast and Ed 2010 because I did a crazy amount of research into the field…but I loved the book anyway, because it’s all the information I learned packed into one book. The pictures are wonderful, and dissected each and every page. From interviews with Phillip Lim, to Amy Astly…I was ALL over that book. It’s an incredibly stimulating read, and I read about careers I didn’t know existed! So now i’m re-evaluating where I want to be in the magazine industry…or perhaps I’ll go wherever the wind blows me. But, I don’t know if that’s smart, given the current economic climate.

I miss Elle girl too, and Cosmo Girl as well. I was really sad to see Cosmogirl go…the copy of the magazine was a bit mundane IMO, but I loved when they re-vamped the mag. That Creative Director worked wonders for their layout! At the moment, my eyes are glued to Nylon, Teen Vogue, Vogue occasionally, and GQ…which is as suprisingly great magazine! Their articles have so much voice and are incredibly witty! Out of all of them, I treasure GQ’s articles the most. Teen Vogue’s spreads are phenominal…but Nylon’s overall creativity is insane. Vogue is pure fashion and a bit elitist, but all fashion is.

I want to try and start reading Nylon, I just have no time at all. I like reading some of the GQ articles online, cause they often have very attractive men in them. I had a subscription to Vogue, but reading that thing is a serious time commitment!

And don’t worry, you still have a little while til you need to get a job!

Our weather has been fabulous since Tuesday-70s and sunny. Good walking weather, and I’ve done a ton of it this week! Stupid MetroBus was all messed up because of some marathon today, so I ended up walking two miles (and then some, I swear New York is the only city where I don’t get lost) to get to the show I was seeing… and I ended up half an hour late, even though I planned on arriving 45 minutes early. Grr indeed.
