Ok, this is pretty much just a rant story, so be prepared. I used to be in the top of the grade until sophomore year. I would study for every single test, get As/A+s on everything, get a lot of awards. Everything seemed to be going the right way. Then, something hit me. It was a combination of a lot of small family things and ADD habits (I have never been diagnosed with ADD, but I still feel that I have it) that just made me apathetic towards school. From then until now, I have barely ever studied for tests or completed much homework, and my GPA has fallen to 3.4, compared to what probably should be a 3.9 at least. My sats have stayed steady around 2150 and my ECs are still pretty good, but I feel I have lost my chance for everything. I have also taken the hardest courses in the school (I've generally done well in classes that don't require work). So, is there any hope for me to reach schools such as Cornell, BC, Carnegie Mellon, Northwester, and others with similar stats? Or do I have to step it down a notch and look into other schools?

Plus, even if you do not go to a top 25 school or so, can you still make it to the best medical schools in the nation (Harvard, JHU, UPenn)? I plan to become a psychiatrist one day, but unfortunately, I am not that familiar with colleges yet. Thanks for any help.

You need to turn it around and work hard senior year, both to bring up the grades and to get back into the habit of trying your hardest. With your current stats, go to princeton review and compare your numbers with those of the schools you are interested in to see if you are competitive for them. I do think you need to find some match and safety schools that you like.

get a nice, hardworking friend, maybe he/she'll influence you enough to make you change.
although, apart from the GPA, i think you have a nice change of getting into the schools you mentioned.
good luck becoming a psychiatrist, we need those.

See your doctor to find out for sure if you have ADD. You can get into a top med school from any college as long as you have the grades/MCAT scores. Even if you don't go to a "top" med school you can still be an excellent doctor.

i definitely agree with calgal, in that you need to work really hard to get your grades up, show an improvement in your senior year, and at that point i think you can look at some schools like BC. don't give up on it now though, because if you work hard in college, you can make it to the top med schools (assuming you get good grades haha)
