So I'd like to know my chances......

Hey guys…so I’m kinda new but I’ve read many other threads people have posted…and I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on my chances at some schools?

well… I’m an junior, Asian male from a public school in MD, and these are my dream schools:

Stanford (top choice)

Princeton

Yale

Duke

Columbia

Johns Hopkins

Georgetown

Cornell

Washington St. Louis

um here are my academics…

GPA:
Unweighted: 4.0, Weighted: 4.71
Class Rank: 1 of 354, shared with 0

PSAT:
223 (hopefully I’ll qualify for semi-finalist…md has one of the highest cutoff lines in the country eh)

SAT:
2180: Math 770, Critical Reading 710, Writing 700 (I know its weak)

SAT II’s:
I took Biology yesterday and I think I’ll hopefully score around a 750…

I plan to take SAT II Math level 2 and US history in October

Here are my extracurriculars:

Teen representative to our community board

there we go…heres what I have right now

dang your stats are really similar to mine. i took the math 2 and got a 780. but screwed up on us history. (sub 700) but overall, your chances look really good.

oh my goodness and the schools u wanna go to are just like mine. wow. i also took bio and chinese for sat 2 and got 720 and 750. ugh retake. and i've done like science fairs and stuff and people say i have decent chances at selective colleges. it looks like u do too

So I'll give percentages on how likely you'll be accepted. Bear in mind that I don't know what you've done within these extracurriculars you've been a part of. Also, what do you want to major in?

Stanford: 40%-->they focus a lot on what you've done other than academics, so make sure to write an astonding essay on an extracurricular you're especially interested in and it'll really boost your acceptance rate.

Princeton: 50%

Yale: 50%

Duke: 55%

Columbia: 70%

Johns Hopkins: 60%

Georgetown: 70%

Cornell: 85%

Washington St. Louis: 60%

I might be judging too hard based on other people on CC. Good luck! :)

i totally agree with forgottenmuch. although i think it would be a little lower percentage for columbia and higher for jh and washington.

Stanford (top choice): Low reach

Princeton: Reach

Yale:Moderate Reach

Duke: Match

Columbia: Match

Johns Hopkins: Match

Georgetown:Match

Cornell: Match

Washington St. Louis: Safety?

I'd say your in at Duke, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Cornell, and Washington St. Louis. As far as Stanford, Columbia, Yale, and Princeton, your just another asian male with an amazing resume. Your chances are good but again, nobody is a match for those schools.

SPYC - about a 5-8% chance. You are Asian and from MD, both over represented. You SATs are average or below at these schools. They admit about 10% mark of applicants. Most applicants are qualified.

Your next group is a better bet, but you still need some real safeties.

thanks for the feedback! I know my chances arent that high and I'm prepared for disappointment really. But the one dream school I'd really wanna get into is Stanford...Yale, Princeton and Columbia are so so. what do you guys think about Duke? worth going if given the opportunity?

I didn't mention my safety schools because I thought it would be irrelevant to get feedback on them...I plan to set those as University of Maryland College Park and Rensselaer Polytech Institute (with $60,000 scholarship)

arrr bump.....

Stanford (top choice) HIGH REACH

Princeton HIGH REACH

Yale HIGH REACH

Duke REACH

Columbia REACH

Johns Hopkins HIGH MATCH

Georgetown MATCH

Cornell LOW REACH

Washington St. Louis HIGH MATCH

Improve your EC's. I don't see any leadership?

BTW, WUSTL is definitely not a safety, sars284. It's not a safety for anyone.

oh leadership? well I do a lot for my teen representative position...I didn't really explain it but its an elected position for our community where three selected students from the various high schools come to meet with the Board members of the neighborhoods. we're in charge of organizing and sponsoring volunteer events, raising money, and informing the schools on any updates with the Board.

and also I'm president of NAHS and treasurer of Amnesty International but I guess I do need more leadership. Actually, I plan to run for Spanish National Honor Society President or Vice

His percentages are really a little high. You don't have an 85% chance at Cornell. Maybe 60%. But putting an actually number to it seems silly. I'd say most of those schools are coin flips or worse. Admissions is tough, but you'll end up somewhere great.

Put it this way, you're in serious contention for all but Stanford, Princeton, and Yale. You still have a shot at those, albeit a much smaller one.
