Last Saturday, I participated in a fundraiser for my friend's high school that involved taking a practice SAT, and I received my scores today. I think I did pretty well for a freshman - I got a 760 on reading (no idea how that happened, it seemed brutally difficult for a standardized test), 740 on writing (no idea how this happened either), and 740 on math. My parents were pleased with my first two scores, but chided me for my math score, saying that it was too low to get into the top-tier engineering schools to which I hope to apply. Their rationale was that the SAT tests no concepts beyond Algebra II, which is a class I took last year. Therefore, by the time I take the real test as a junior, my knowledge of SAT math concepts would have deteriorated to such an extent that my score would drop further, putting me completely out of contention for top schools. I am not concerned regarding the results of this practice test, but am posting so that my parents may see your responses. I understand that this may seem immature or pretentious, but any responses are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You have excellent scores for a freshman, extremely excellent, actually. Just keep in touch with the material and practice the Blue Book sections the summer before you take it junior year. You have a good shot at a 2400.

Stop worrying you are ONLY in 9th grade. You have higher scores than seniors who take the test. You are in great shape.

Sheesh, I’d be extroardinarily happy to get those scores as a junior! Math builds on itself so you’ll be practicing most of the math in whatever math classes you’re taking sophomore and junior year. No need to worry.
