So is ANYONE here not applying to the Ivies?

Hope is a good thing too though. ;)

I don;t think you should apply just to Ivies, because what if you don't get in???

The odds for some people of going 0-for-5 with the Lesser Five ivies is infinitessimally small. Of course, there aren't many of these people.

"The odds for some people of going 0-for-5 with the Lesser Five ivies is infinitessimally small. Of course, there aren't many of these people."

There are plenty of people who don't have the stats to get into an Ivy and that's fine, because you can succeed elsewhere (like at Rice right breeze?)

I think some of you guys are unfairly knocking the Ivies as being filled with snobby people though. I can understand if you think they're too expensive but to call them all style and no substance is pretty reactionary. These schools were considered great before the rankings you know. And being an Ivy League student doesn't make you a superior person. But neither does bashing them to appear different or above such arrogance.

I'm not applying to any Ivies either. I think I would find them way too competitive!

There are three very good reasons not to apply to the Ivies:

(the most important) none of them appeals to you or your needs.

You would be wasting the application fee because the odds are against you (acceptance rates are among the very lowest in the country)

You can't afford it; unlike many other elite schools (like Rice, Tufts, etc) none of the ivies give merrit money to try to lure the top students away from other schools (unlike many schools, they don't need to, so they don't) beyond that there are no athletic scholarships like at fantastic schools like UMich, Berkeley, etc, of course their athletic prowess does not hold up as well as their academic prowess because of it.

I probably won't apply to the Ivies....I'm looking more at small LAC's, because that's more my thing, although i was thinking about applying to yale because 1)they have a good english program and 2) Just to see If i could get in

brown will be my, one fantastically out of my range reach, where I would probably spontanteously combust if i got accepted. pton and yale I like as well, but probably won't apply to either

I think the reason why some people are attracted to the "ivies" is because of the distinction it holds. When people ask you, "where'd you go to school?' or "where'd you get accepted?" ... your answer can be, "well, right now i'm debating between harvard and yale. i just can't seem to figure out which one i like better." I am not gunna lie. It is simply impressive to be accepted to an ivy, let alone attend one.
For some kids, the ivies are a great fit. They get to be with kids they would've loved to have been with throughout high school or maybe even beyond that. The biggest problem with the ivies is the cost. It's the one BIG downfall about the ivies. I don't think any school should be above giving out merit aid, even if it is very limited. However, my little opinion doesn't matter much to powerhouses of the likes of princeton and so forth.
Anyhow, I just want to wish everyone the best. I hope all of you get the opportunity to go to the school you want to. And I hope it's not too expensive as well, even if you parents are paying for it. From you ivy-leaguers to you community collegers, i hope all goes well for everyone!

Also if anyone would be so kind... what's a TTT? (i know it has something to do with colleges)

TTT = Third Tier Toilet, an acronym NYCFan, aka Byerly, claims to have invented.

well , after reviewing your posts I've learned a lot about how you American guys think about an IVY education. Here in China, getting into an IVY school is sometimes overexaggerated (although it's indeed much harder to get into for an int'l student)
It seems that lots of people only care about a BIG NAME instead of a GOOD MATCH.
I really appreciate some of your opinions!
This year I did apply to an Ivy(Cornell) through ED1, well, I indeed wanted a big name, besides, I wanted to major in Hotel Administration(so you must know well why I applied). Unfortunately, I got deferred. However then I didn't wait until their RD decison, i applied Bucknell under ED2 then got in. Now i have nothing to repent of, coz i feel i made a smart decision:) I've just heard many kids took Bucknell over Cornell, you're so congenial to me:)

hmm i think the reason most people on here apply to ivy is well...cmon first they are on here becuz they are obsessed with gettin into a GOOD college (as am i =) whether or not i have the grades =( and who else would waste their time on the internet talking about it with people all over the US and the world as i c from the post above..
