I mean, the reason I made this thread is because high school has been a complete mess. And I KNOOW that tulane is in the heart of the deep south, where homophobia exist..blah blah..i understand all of that information. But, I've heard from so many people that college is a much more carefree environment, so I'm hoping that I can at least "fit in," not that it's my goal, mind you. So yes.

As I said before, we're from the South (and La is not the heart of the deep south), but my daughter feels that Tulane has a decidely "northern" feel to it. She got a lot of remarks about being southern and her accent - and she does not have a heavy southern accent.

Although Tulane has a very geographically diverse student body, I met a lot of kids from Chicago when we arrived to pick her up. (Over the last year I've met kids from Wis, NC, Tenn, Fl, HI and WA.) Tulane's main "southern" feel seems to come in the food - and that is really cajun and not southern. You can not even get decent sweet tea in New Orleans!

Believe me you will meet more kids from the North and Midwest than from the South.

My son (who is straight) shared with me that he's met lots of gays at Tulane. Could be partially because his roommate came out while a freshman there. But S and his girlfriend have many gay friends between them. And S's old freshman roommate is now one of his closest friends.

I got the impression that there is a gay community there that seems to be readily accepted. I also get the impression that the Tulane community is quite accepting in general. I believe this to be one of its greatest strengths.

I think you'll be fine.

yay! i'm smiling now
